Texas Blue –Eye soul singing legend Delbert McClinton stopped by The Heights Theater last weekend to perform before a sold out house. The place was so sold out it barely accommodated a few standing room only fans tucked in tight against the walls.
Delbert’s live shows are known to be incredible performances and this one was no different. Featuring a top notch 8 piece band that rocked the venue with a set of classic Delbert McClinton originals as well as a few cover tunes re-worked Delbert style.
The band included Fender Telecaster guitar masters James Pennebaker and journeyman Bob Britt seamlessly swapping rhythm and lead parts throughout the show. Renowned session sax player Dana Robbins along with Quentin “Q” Ware on trumpet made for one tough horn section while Mike Joyce on bass and Jack Bruno on drums dominated the rhythm of the performance.
The show started out with “Mr. Smith is Back in Town”, a jumping number that got the band and the crowd warmed up for the evenings musical things to come.
Other tunes featured through out the show included an up-tempo version of “Take Me to the River”, “Gone to Mexico”, “Fine Little Healthy Thing”, “Sending Me Angels” as well as McClinton’s signature songs “Shaky Ground” and “Giving It Up For Your Love”.
R& B Western Swing Blues with a touch of roadhouse soul is one way of describing McClinton’s musical style but even that description doesn’t encapsulate this multiple Grammy winning artist’s take on music. Check him out the next time he’s around your town for a gut bucket get down good time.
A special thanks to our friends and great staff at The Heights Theater for bringing another fantastic show to the Bayou City. The Heights Theater always has something great going on so be sure to watch their calendar for more killer shows coming up.
