\"\"The great city of Galveston, Texas has begun to flourish again after the\u00a0wrath of Hurricane Ike in 2008.\u00a0 Rose & I got to take in 2 venues that were clobbered, but have re-surfaced quite well. We saw “Spamalot” at the Grand 1894 Opera House in the afternoon and followed that up with a visit to the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe that evening for a gent by the name of Jesse Dayton.\u00a0 Both said venues had major damage and it took a lot of work to get them back up and running.<\/p>\n

“Wrecks” Bell is a classic dude who runs the OQAC.\u00a0 He’s a goofy sort in a good way and always has such a neat perspective on life through an always on point sense of humor.\u00a0 Tonight’s performer also has a sense of humor that produced belly laughs throughout the evening.<\/p>\n

Based out of Austin this honky tonk badass brought his acoustic version of a gig along with only a stand up bass player, Rick Watson.<\/p>\n

JD asked off the bat: “Who out there is from Beaumont and will admit it?” \u00a0Being born there JD has roots listening to the likes of Hank Williams and his personal hero George Jones, whom he referred to often during the show. He mentioned how Galveston had a lot of childhood memories of going to the beach and always wearing a band aid on his belly button because his uncle told him his guts might fall out!\u00a0 Classic.<\/p>\n

When he got down to business he was spot on with “King of Broken Hearts”, “She’s Kissing Abilene Goodbye” and “The Good Times Are Now” which he penned while on Galveston Island. The guy can do novelty type songs\u00a0with lyrics “I’m out getting hammered while she’s out gettin’ nailed” and pull them off with killer guitar picking, too. It had been too long since we caught JD and I had forgotten how talented his guitar prowess was.<\/p>\n

JD spoke of his weird hook-up with metal mad man Rob Zombie which has helped spawn a movie career in the Devil’s Rejects.\u00a0 His recalling when Zombie contacted him about how his white trash music would fit nicely with his horror movies was epic when he said: “Yeah it\u2019s like a guy shakin’ your hand while peeing on your leg!”<\/p>\n

The guy has a laid back persona that was evident on\u00a0“Lately I’ve Let Things Slide” and “Let’s All Get Stoned and Listen to George Jones”\u00a0after which he stated he was sober but would change that shortly!\u00a0 JD was proud to say he is officially sponsored by Jim Beam.<\/p>\n

Dude spoke of texting his bud Hayes Carll while HC was preparing to appear on the Tonight Show: “Hey how’s the catering?!\u00a0 Hayes’ reply: “It’s mindboggling!”\u00a0 Great flow of real life stuff with a tang of comedy all night.<\/p>\n

Dayton floored me with a KILLER cover of the Cars “Just What I Needed”, “Pretty Girls Make the World Go ‘Round” \u00a0(penned with\u00a0Mike Stinson) ,\u00a0and “I’ve Seen the World Thru a Whiskey Bottle”.<\/p>\n

This guy has a modern day country (in a good way) Elvis thing goin’ on, too. Jesse Dayton has made guitar contributions to the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson folks. Not chump change names.<\/p>\n

“Harris County Blues” was followed by a tender request of “Memphis” with closer “Planet of Love”. JD took the time to give a major shout out to the vets of Texas music who remember dudes like Wrecks Bell and keep performing in the cool city of Galveston.<\/p>\n

Y’all\u00a0should to go give this lil hole in the wall a shot when you can. Just to see WB’s Townes Van Zandt “shrine” is worth the visit!\u00a0\u00a0 And please do not forget a can of dog & cat food for the Humane Society!\u00a0 \u00a0God Bless Galveston and have a nice day….<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
