Their ensemble known as Five Peace Band is a musical tour de force that features some of the best jazz musicians in the business. Miles Davis alum, Kenny Garrett is featured on sax. Christian McBride takes the bass to an un-worldly level and Brian Blade’s infectious and rhythmic drum work is extraordinary.

The almost three hour show consisted of seven songs made up of extended solo work by each musician. To say the 5 peace band consists of improvisational masters would be an understatement. Each member took their turn in going over the musical edge and back again, playing from the hip and playing from the heart. Although McLaughlin and Corea are the household names of the band, neither really dominated the show. Each member’s contribution was balanced and vital to the cohesiveness of the performance.

The complete set list from the evenings show is as follows. Raju, The Disguise, New Blues Old Bruise, Señor CS, Hymn to Andromeda, Dr. Jackle and In A Silent Way/ It’s About That Time.

This was not a show that relied on the past musical successes of McLaughlin and Corea. It did, however feature more up to date compositions by both. No Return to Forever or Mahavishnu Orchestra material was within earshot. What was heard by the good size crowd was classic, no gimmick, straight – no chaser jazz which has become an unfortunate rarity in Houston. With the exception of Corea’s 70’s super group Return to Forever’s memorable appearance last year, this has been the only other notable jazz performance on the Houston scene lately.

Both disciples of Miles Davis, Corea and McLaughlin paid tribute to their mentor by performing the 1969 Davis composition ‘In a Silent Way’. Another jazz great honored during the performance was Jackie McLean, the sax man who help pioneer the Bop Jazz scene of the 50’s and 60’s with Davis, Coltrane and Charlie Parker. The McLean number, Dr. Jackle, relied heavily on Kenny Garrett’s sax playing as should be expected for a McLean piece. The balance of the material featured was Corea and McLaughlin compositions from their solo releases Floating Point, Industrial Zen and The New Crystal Silence to name a few.

For the jazz purist this was the show of shows. It was a tremendous event that featured incredible musicianship by some of the best purveyors of the genre.

Written by Jim Bille Apr 01, 2009 at 08:00 PM Jazz masters Chick Corea and John McLaughlin have teamed up for a first ever world tour that made a stop at the Verizon Wireless Theater.
