One of the legendary traits of metal greats Slayer is how their fans will chant their name until they come to the stage. Well, how awesome is a band if their fans actually sing entire songs while they wait for them to hit the stage?

You just need to ask the fans of Against Me!, who on this night sang their favorite songs songs at the top of their lungs as the stage crew tested out the amplifiers. While the club had music filling the break pouring from the speakers, it had no chance of drowning out the die-hard fans who wanted to give hommage to their favorite band by singing their songs as if they were anthems.

As the band took the stage, the singing voices quickly turned to screams of joy, but only for a few moments as everyone joined in singing Pints of Guinness Make You Strong. Vocalist/guitarist Tom Gabel fought for his microphone for most of the song as the audience took to the stage for first hand involvement in the set.

Not even tracks from their new album, Searching for a Former Clarity, quieted the audience as screams of “MIAMI!! FUCKIN’ MIAMI” filled the Engine Room as the band tore through album opener, Miami. The energy of the band and the audience was intoxicating as a steady flow of young adults took to the stage to sing, dance and celebrate with the band.

As the pinnacle of the set, the majority of the audience ran up on the stage to sing Baby, I’m An Anarchist to close out the initial set. There is something amazing about seeing nearly as many people on stage with a band having the time of their life as there are people standing on the floor singing along. This set seemed more about experiencing a moment than seeing a band play. This is what makes Against Me! have such a loyal and loving audience.

To close the night off, the band returned to the stage for an encore and invited a member of the audience to play guitar so Gabel could be free to flail about the stage and jump into the audience. There is a reason to still believe in the power of punk rock, because under all the bought up, watered-down junk are bands like Against Me! giving people are reason to care and something to love.

Written by Samuel Barker Nov 05, 2005 at 08:00 PM There is something to be said for a band that has its fan’s chanting its name before it hits the stage.
