And on the first night of the tour things really went off without a hitch.

The show kicked off with Two Foot Fred emceeing the event. He told jokes and talked about himself before introducing the bands. This guy is really very funny…they better watch out before long he will need his own time slot.

Now to be honest I couldn’t tell you who he intoduced initially due to the noise in the place, but this guy came out and only played one song that caught everyone’s attention . Next up James Otto took the stage and played three songs including his song I Know What You Did, which I really enjoyed. This is someone you need to make it out to see.

Jon Nicholson closed out the first set. This guy was classic, taking the stage in a tan leasure suit and a red Van’s trucker hat, he took his spot behind his keyboard and I became an instant fan, just add grandma! He has a presence that draws you in and has a great energy that keeps you involved. With Songs about things like his drummer stealing his stereo and his pot smoking grandma, how can you really go wrong?

After a short break and stage change the lights went down and Gretchen Wilson took the stage opening with Here for the Party. The crowd immediately went nuts and began singing along. She played four songs off of her debut then started songs off her latest realese All Jacked Up. Telling stories as she went through her set, such as how the album was done when the song I Don’t Feel Like Loving You Today was brought to her, and because she liked it so well they went back into the studio to add it to the album. She also talked about how she wrote her song Rebel Child for her daughter.

She was so much fun to watch and really shared the spotlight with the band well, which is refreshing in popular artists. After a high energy start to the show she slowed things down and did a very loungy song called Good Morning Heartache, this song really showed her vocal range. It was slow and very sexy.

Next she took her place in the band and allowed guitar player and band leader Dean Hall to take center stage to preform a song he wrote Kicked by a Mule. It’s a great song you may have seen it on the Gretchen Wilson Undressed special during the backstage jam. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to watch and great to see her give her band mates the opportunity to shine. That song really brought the energy back up and Gretchen announced it was time to Rock N Roll as the band played the first notes of the Heart song Barracuda.

Now normally when I see a band I HATE to see them do covers but she nailed this to the wall, once again showing that vocally she’s not to be messed with. She also covered Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog before closing with All Jacked Up, which concluded with lots of fireworks and streamers.

After waving goodnight as the lights going down, she came back for Redneck Woman, making the comment “No, we didn’t forget.” Everyone sang along and once she was done, she took a few minutess to say her goodbyes by high fiving many in the audience before exiting the stage.

After a brief intermission and some more one-liners from Two Foot Fred the lights went down once again and from a smoke filled pod Big and Rich emmerged and opened the show with Coming To Your City.

Leaving no lull from the end of Gretchen Wilson’s set to the beginning of their set, the audience errupted. Signs were being waved, women squeeled like they were 12 again and the band patrolled the stage with Big Kenny and John Rich. While there were some lulls in the set, the ratio of hit to normal album track was so high that these songs were needed to wet throats and rest vocal chords for the barrage of sing alongs this set provided.

Songs like Big Time added to the party atmosphere these two bring to their set. It was something you rarely find at a concert of this magnitude, where everyone is entralled by the band, singing along and having the big venue equivalent of a house party. Beer was sloshing, couples were making out and friends were celebrating life together. This was a real life party right in the middle of a concert.

The party hit the pinnacle when the anthem of the year, Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy), was performed by everyone in attendance at the show. No one held back a single note, the audience sang as loud and true as they could while the band performed at their top ability. How could you go wrong with a night like this? You can’t. It’s that simple.

Gretchen Wilson’s Set List:
Here for the Party
Homewrecker
When It Rains
Cheatin
Politically Uncorrect
Rebel Child
I Don’t Feel Like Loving You Today
Skoal Ring
California Girls
Good Morning Heartache
Kicked By A Mule
Barracuda
Black Dog
All Jacked Up
Encore:
Redneck Woman

Big & Rich’s Set List:
Coming to Your City
Blow My Mind
Wild West Show
Kick My Ass
Bedroom Music
Love Train
Holy Water
Big Time
Chicken
Last Yeehaw
Save A Horse
Encore:
Rollin’

Written by Rayanna Barker Nov 04, 2005 at 08:00 PM Friday night marked the kick off of the Big & Rich / Gretchen Wilson American Revolution tour and they came out guns blazing with the whole Muzik Mafia in tow.
