Seems like yesterday that we were hot on the trail of Hayes Carll’s career along with side kick buddy John Evans. The two had been paired as the Ego Brothers throwing wild Toga Party gigs at the Continental Club in Houston back in 2008 and Carll’s Stingaree Festivals in Bolivar Peninsula were kick ass, too.

Well, this night they were back with JE warming the stage at the new indoor digs in Stafford at the Redneck Country Club.

This was the first venture for Rose and myself to thee enclosed venue and it definitely is a throw down kicker bar type environment. There were plenty of lawn chairs, but most were spoken for in an upgrade or VIP section. Regardless, that did not matter much because standing was the norm for this full throttle Americana honky tonk bash. The Twin Towers (both cats 6’5″) rolled out all the favorites and this crowd ate it up with a fork and spoon big time.

Evans’ “Pasa-get-down-dena” rocked the joint and the booze fueled romp was on. Hell, Evans even has a tune he does called “Whiskey for the Band” and it worked major! JE has a punk rock mentality in a country rock body backed by reliable guitar dude and lap steel player Billy Beason, but lacking usual stand up bass guru Jake Marchese this gig. Couldn’t ask for a better set up man to a show and it was nice to catch him again.

Carll has been riding a major wave for awhile now and his combination of dry wit backed by crackerjack band mates is an enjoyable performance for sure.

Dueling guitars of Scott Davis and Travis Linville rock and were backed by stellar drum work by Austin’s Mike Meadows, who seems to play with everybody these days. All the while, Hayes just sifts around the stage letting the vibe come and go to perfection while he drawls his unique vocal style of intimate, soulful and country rockin’ lyrics into a masterful combination of a comedy gig and foot stompin’ experience.

This jamboree included a heavy dose of his latest album “KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)” with the stellar title cut including a Dylan blues mix romps tossed in and funny as all get out “One Bed, Two Girls, Three Bottles of Wine”!! Other gems that are always welcome to this reviewer were “Beaumont”, “Good Friends”, “Drunken Poet’s Dream”, tongue in cheek “She Left Me for Jesus”, “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” and cute as heck “Girl Downtown”.

But the ones that always amp it up are stompers like “Little Rock” and “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart” where the masterful jamming sets Carll’s outfit up to another level and the joint was soaking it up!

Looking forward to when HC pens some new material and hopefully keeps the momentum and this quality band in tow…Hats off again to the fine folks @ RCC! I now know what to expect for future indoor gigs and that’s plenty of bombastic fun at a “Gilley’s” type environment complete with cold beer, lots of ‘brown water’ flowin’ and a good mix of mature aged music lovers. Happy Blessed Holidays to everybody who gets off their duff and supports LIVE music!

Written by Eddie Ferranti It is amazing how time flies sometimes in the music world we live in.
