{"id":197,"date":"2014-11-08T19:00:07","date_gmt":"2014-11-08T19:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/216.71.127.204\/wordpress\/?p=197"},"modified":"2015-10-05T16:27:53","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T16:27:53","slug":"jonathan-byrd-barnes-house-concerts-houston-tx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/houstonmusicreview.com\/wordpress\/2014\/11\/08\/jonathan-byrd-barnes-house-concerts-houston-tx\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan Byrd &#8211; Barnes House Concerts &#8211; Houston, TX"},"content":{"rendered":"<table class=\"contentpaneopen\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\" width=\"70%\"><span class=\"small\">Written by Eddie Ferranti <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"createdate\" colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Cackalack, North Carolina is famous for some famous spice sauces derived from naturally delicious sweet potatoes\u00a0among other things.\u00a0 One of thee other things happens to be a gent by the name of Jonathan Byrd. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">HMR saw him at this venue before,\u00a0<\/span><a id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1415716572680_4532\" style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1840&amp;Itemid=7\"><u><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=1840&amp;Itemid=7<\/span><\/u><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">) , but this go around a few things had changed.\u00a0 For one, \u00a0the house concert itself had a major do over in the form of a wall coming down opening the room up big time.\u00a0 Bill and Deanna Barnes&#8217; transformed their home of 41 years into a comfortable for at least 50 folks venue that provided\u00a0plenty of space\u00a0for the 3-piece band this night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2014concert\/110814-jbyrd1.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Byrd on acoustic guitar\u00a0was joined by the mellow cello bottom sound of Paul Ford, and the\u00a0multiple talents of guitarist \/mandolin\/saw\/harp player Johnny Waken. The major key to this evening&#8217;s performance was the ample use of electric guitar by Waken.\u00a0 In my opinion, the electric guitar gets lost in the shuffle too often in the singer\/songwriter shows. When used properly it enhances the gig and as JB told me afterwards: &#8220;Electric guitar playing serves as yet another voice in the presentation.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Tune called &#8220;Chickenwire&#8221; got this mature audience singin&#8217; along from the get go and Byrd and company exuded a smooth dynamic spooky good sound all night. Other highlights were &#8220;Big Truck Brought It In&#8221; with effective saw playing, &#8220;Diana Jones&#8221; off his 2008 release &#8216;The Law and the Lonesome&#8217;,\u00a0 touching tale &#8220;Father&#8217;s Day&#8221; about his dad who was a Baptist minister with lots of bad habits that he passed on to JB, and\u00a0&#8220;Pale Rider on a White Horse&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Accolades like &#8216;one of the top 50 songwriters of the last 50 years&#8217; and being the &#8216;most buzzed about songwriter in folkdom&#8217; seem to fit quite well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Byrd has a new album coming soon called &#8220;You Can&#8217;t Outrun the Radio&#8221; and the title cut was sweet.\u00a0 The electric guiitar magic jumped out on &#8220;May the River Run Dry&#8221; unleashing Waken to a very attentive crowd of music lovers.\u00a0 Speaking of which, Deanna had &#8220;drafted&#8221; a good amount of newbies and they seemed more than happy to be there.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Hell the feedbag I strapped on stayed filled all night and if you left hungry it was your own fault!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Another bonus was the appearance\u00a0of\u00a0Butch Morgan in the packed house.
