A cool lady rode an elevator with me briefly talking about the experience and then a day or so later I walked a ways exchanging pleasantries again headed to a room for music. Come to find out later that night when Rose & I went into a gig Evie Ladin and Keith Terry were actually performers! We kept in touch and they came to yet another fine new House Concert for us, Cortlandt House Concerts, and put on a most entertaining show.

To say this duo is a bit off the wall would be putting it mildly in a good way. Incorporating ‘Buckdancing’ and “face playing” were stand out qualities to the evening, along with downright good clawhammer banjo, guitar and bass playing with harmonizing galore on the vocals.

The super positive vibe, razor sharp wit and million dollar smiles kept me glued to the gig and wouldn’t let go. The packed house seemed taken aback at times about the mash up quirkiness of this talented “hop ‘n go” married of twelve years couple who can wear their emotions on their sleeves or make you guffaw out loud from song to song.

Evie even opened the second set acapella doing a stirring gospel song “Redeeming Love”, followed by hubbie KT doing a number with plenty of toe tapping and slapping of his body parts with no music and rolled into a exhibition that is best explained like they were stomping on bugs and swatting flies! Never thought clapping hands and snapping fingers could sound this good.

Girl has been playing banjo since age 8 and clogging since 5 and both come off at a live show as a smooth arresting experience. Her 2012 release ‘Evie Ladin Band’ won Americana Album of the year by the Independent Music Awards Vox Pop Vote. Terry is a pioneer to say the least in contemporary Body Music and is the founder of the International Body Music Festival.

A stand out tune (hopefully title correct) was “Precious Days” which exemplified this twosome big time about appreciating life, family and doing what you like doing along the way. They call Oakland, California home these days but tour a lot with their kids who were upstairs snoozing while they tore the place up downstairs. They play all over the world, adult and children shows, and they have an unique talent for making old sound new.

In closing, the easist way to describe them is they are damn good entertainers. Vibrant and so full of life it made me feel good to get off my duff and go support them. Glad I “ran into” Evie like I did after all.

As far as the venue, it is a keeper in the Houston Heights. Mary Scott Hagle has been running this shindig since 2003. Having a nice pot luck of above average finger foods and wine flowing was nice for thee at least 40 in attendance. She shared with me she has about four shows a year and has had as many as 95 folks packed in!

The House Concert scene is surging in Texas and it is hard to keep up with all of them these days, but HMR will be on the look out for whomever graces this lady’s stage! God Bless all the true music lovers out there…

Written by Eddie Ferranti If you’ve had the pleasure of going to Folk Alliance International, you’ll find it to be an overwhelming blur of musicians and people passing by constantly heading to gigs and whatever.
