Ever since Rose &amp; I experienced Folk Alliance\u2019s in Memphis, Kansas City and Austin we\u2019ve been smitten with the talent that exists in Canada.\u00a0 A Toronto transplant to Austin, Whitney Rose, added to that list in a wonderful way.\u00a0 This young lady looked much younger than the poster advertising her gig, but her performance belied her youth paying homage to traditional country while adding Austin rock to the package.<\/p>\n<p>Her latest release, \u201cSouth Texas Suite\u201d, is chocked full of heavyweights contributing following the lead of Maverick\u2019s stud Raul Malo who produced the disc.\u00a0 Haybale\u2019s Redd Volkaert, Earl Poole Ball, Tom Lewis and Kevin Smith churned out the album at Dale Watson\u2019s Ameripolitan Studios in Austin.\u00a0 On top of that sitting in this night was Lisa Pankrantz of Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones fame on skins.\u00a0 Talk about getting someone\u2019s attention!\u00a0 This lady has turned some heads in a very competitive town and market.\u00a0 Her electric lead this night , Bryce Clark, smoked the joint many times when WR stepped back and gave him room.<\/p>\n<p>The lil lady showed great stage coolness and control without much wasted gabbing. Her funny bone showed up when she remarked how she was over-dressed: \u201cIt\u2019s cold outside, but it ain\u2019t up here!\u201d Rose has said her songwriting has gone thru the roof since she hit Texas and it shows coupled with a razor sharp backing band. Good funky pickin\u2019 showed up on \u201cThe Devil Borrowed My Boots Last Night\u201d,\u00a0 newbie \u201cAnalog\u201d cooked, and \u201cThe Last Party\u201d showcased her effortless charisma beyond her years.\u00a0 Amazing though that it was some covers that showed why there is such a buzz about this performer. Whitney herself describes her sound as \u201cvintage-pop-infused-neo-traditional-country.\u201d So there.\u00a0 Whatever you want to call it we call it a breath of fresh air in the muddled arena of youthful country starlets. Texas is lucky to have a star on the horizon like this and the future looks as bright as a morning sunrise from our view\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of bright futures, the venue this night has had one for over 25 years running. Rusty, Teresa, Shane and their hard working staff continue to deliver night after night.\u00a0 The sound quality is one of the best around (ranked in Top 5 by Houston Press), the beer is cold and the food is not bar food by a longshot!\u00a0 Veggie burgers, fish tacos, Shepherd\u2019s Pie and Ploughman\u2019s plate rank as some of our faves along with nightly specials!\u00a0 There is a reason why a music place can last as long as this one.\u00a0 Quality from top to bottom.\u00a0 They offer different types of music that can satisfy whatever genre you are seeking.
