Live music usually takes a back seat during December for the most part, but this year was different for Rose and myself. We landed a major score by finally catching up with a band out of Austin named Uncle Lucius.

We had seen them play for like 40 minutes last March at the KPFT Birthday bash at this same venue, McGonigel’s Mucky Duck.

The five members squeezed on stage and let it rip from start to finish before an overflow SRO crowd, which had two shows at 7 & 9:30pm!

Backing their 2012 release, ‘And You Are Me’, the band packs a southern rock bluesy punch that reminded me of the sound of the Allman Brothers and Black Crowes.

Band members include Kevin “Grizzly Adams” Galloway on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Hal Vorpahl on bass, Mike Carpentar on lead BAD ASS guitar and vocals, Josh “Tearin’ it up” on drums and Jon Gossman on killer keys. Galloway looks like he’d be at ease with an axe on his shoulder out in the wild woods and leads this tight knit group as they push their deep roots rock sound thru elongated “trippy” jam sessions. Dude played barefoot and the head shaking out of control energy would make AC/DC’s Angus Young proud was quite stunning from all the members. And lots of hair in this band, for sure! It looks like they were pulled right out of the 1970’s.

Killer cuts that stood out included powerful ‘Pocket Full of Misery’, ‘Take Me Away’, new cut ‘Wheels in Motion’, ‘In the 118’ and steamy hot ‘Keep the Wolves Away’ about chemical plant failures in Freeport, Texas. These guys even drift off to a Pink Floyd sound at times and they put the whole place in a trance like on ‘Nice and Easy Baby’.

Uncle Lucius takes you back to when music was laid back and cool-just like the members themselves. Hell, they even are donating $3 from every CD sale to the Texas Food Bank Network. Very nice touch indeed.

This wild bunch tours non-stop and they pride their live show as a sacred and energetic experience, with a belief that this is still the truest form of communication with their fans. Wow, what a concept huh?!

In today’s cell phone social networking computer age that is a bold and refreshing way to do business in my book. Judging by the massive audience they drew during the holidays I’d say it is working out fine. Sure won’t be nine months before we catch this act again…Happy New Year!

Written by Eddie Ferranti Dec 27, 2013 at 07:00 PM The Christmas season is mostly about reflecting on the past year while eating and drinking with family and friends.
