The stage was the same one used for the 2012 shows in New Jersey, which included the infamous Tongue Pit stuffed to capacity with fans. The wrap around runway extended well into the arena so fans were able to get a little bit closer to Mick, Keith and Ron as they frequently made the roundabout throughout the night.

The sound was unbelievably good as was the somewhat modest stage set up. No huge blow up Honky Tonk women would be sharing the stage as in past shows, no massive towers for Jagger to scale. The only thing that might give you the feeling of the over the top Rolling Stones stage production was the giant red lips that surrounded the stage for part of the show.

The 50 and Counting Tour is less of a birthday bash and more of a Rolling Stones history lesson. The evening was chock full of vintage material that included numbers like early 60’s rockers, “Get Off of My Cloud”, “Paint it Black” and (I Can’t Get No) “Satisfaction”.

As with all of this tour’s shows, the Stones have invited special guests to perform a number or two with them. In Oakland, Tom Waits was on hand to help Jagger croak out their 1965 chart-topping hit “Little Red Rooster”. It was a different sound to say the least.

Keith Richards and Ron Wood dominated the stage with their guitar lick tradeoffs seemingly no worse for the wear and tear that comes with getting a little bit older. Ever steady and stoic, Charlie Watts held the rhythm down with his instinctively automatic and timeless Stones beat. He truly is the drummer’s drummer.

Mick Jagger is an age contradiction. Sprinting and cavorting around the stage for a two and a half hour set would wear out most people half his age, but Jagger’s energy and obvious stamina seemed to know no boundaries.

As mentioned, the Stones have been inviting guests to perform with them on this tour. The ultimate guest without a doubt was former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor who joined his former band mates on “Midnight Rambler”. Taylor’s guitar playing was showcased exclusively on this number.
Taylor has signed on for the complete tour and hopefully the Stones will throw him a few more bones and include him on other numbers or ideally the whole show as the tour progresses.

Throughout the evening the Stones dazzled the packed house with music that is considered by many to now be Rock and Roll standards. Numbers like “Honky Tonk Women”, “Brown Sugar” and “Sympathy for the Devil” are an almost guarantee to hear at a Stones concert and this one included them all.

The Rolling Stones 50 and Counting Tour is an event not to be missed, so start saving up for a ticket now and go see why the Rolling Stones are still the greatest Rock and Roll band in the world.

Complete Setlist:
Get Off Of My Cloud
It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It)
Live With Me
Paint It Black
Gimme Shelter
Little Red Rooster (with Tom Waits)
Dead Flowers
Emotional Rescue
All Down The Line
Doom & Gloom
One More Shot
Honky Tonk Women
Before They Make Me Run
Happy
Midnight Rambler (with Mick Taylor)
Miss You
Start Me Up
Tumbling Dice
Brown Sugar
Sympathy For The Devil
ENCORE
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction

Written by Jim Bille May 05, 2013 at 08:00 PM The Rolling Stones came through Oakland, California last Sunday night for the second stop of their 2013 Fifty and Counting Tour at the Oakland Arena.
