He caught our fancy back in 2004 with his long locks down his back, screechin’ out the blues rock at places like Yaga’s in Galveston. Then we always dug his Christmas duets with Carolyn Wonderland, which were smokin’ hot at the Mucky Duck. But, by 2006, he basically went underground.

His hard times have surfaced successfully through his latest CD ‘Hard Dollar”. Sayers’ self described “rehab for the soul” took place in Ohio while rebuilding a shack with a dude named Conrad McCorkle. This night at the intimate confines of the Mucky Duck in Houston, Mr. Sayers looked comfortable and ready to ride this new material hard, no pun intended.

“Flat Black Automobile” opened the gig and Hadden’s grin was from ear to ear! This cat has always been the ‘happiest blues player I’ve ever seen’. His infectious grin and grinder blues style put us at ease and he slid the rockin’ blues right through our souls. Gems that played well from the new album (yes, he was selling vinyl!) were “Inside Out Boogie”, “Take Me Back to Texas” which was the first song he wrote when in Ohio, and “Ain’t Comin’ ‘Round No More”. He blended in some sizzling covers like Sam Cook’s “What a Wonderful World This Could Be” turnin’ on the soul beautifully and Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” kickin’ butt.

Have to tip my hat major to sidekicks Dave Dewitt on hammond organ and Tony McClung on drums. Their mesmerizing melting of Sayers’ blues smoothness with animated jams was a joy to take in. Tribute to old bass player Charlie Knight on “Down & Out of My Mind” was touching. “Back to the Blues” was a well received cut from the new one featuring the dynamic Ruthie Foster. Hadden has been hangin’ his cool little hats on Foster’s tail as her lead guitarist these days, which is a super combo. GOT to catch that soon.

The second half of the show oozed with deep acapella style delvery sans the mike and cupping his hands to shout ‘Oh Yeahs’ and get the packed house crowd boomin’! “Beer Drinkin'” rocked and “Hippie Getaway” was spooky good as Sayers’ yet again shifted gears from pop rock to blues to stone cold slide jams. Nice stuff to slam a few cold ones with on Friday the 13th.

Fitting and superbly done encore of Prince’s “Purple Rain” capped the evening showcasing his versatility. Hadden mentioned he’d be back at Christmas time and I’m already lookin’ forward to seeing him again. God Bless dudes who pull themselves back up to pursue things you love and cherish in your life…

See you out there somewhere in live music land!

Written by Eddie Ferranti Jul 13, 2012 at 08:00 PM Hadden Sayers has been around the block to say the least and we’re glad to see him back.
