Three fine and talented ladies comprise NY based “Red Molly” in the form of Laurie MacAllister on bass, Abbie Gardner on dobro and Molly Venter on guitar.

What caught our ear in Kansas City was their gorgeous harmonies that were only enhanced to a hypnotic level at this acoustically rich venue. They all have their own style of vocal expression, but thee a capella opener, ‘Copper Ponies’, was stunning to say the least.

Their latest album,’The Red Album’, is the group’s second since the departure of original founding member Carolann Solebello which was featured along with some super covers displaying how talented these lasses are. Standing out besides the vibrant voices were the bad ass dobro jams by Gardner and guitar work by pepper pot Venter that showed these women could produce an edgey Americana stomp when they let loose, like on namesake Richard Thompson tune ‘Red Molly’!

Other goodies included Paul Simon’s ‘Homeward Bound’ which brought goosebumps, ‘Beaumont Rest Stop’, ‘Work I Done’ and Jonathan Byrd penned ‘I’m Only Right When I’m All Wrong’.

These gals are the full package of classic country heartbreak, swing, authentic folk and a heavy dash of gospel rock thrown in for good measure.

The send off of finger snappin’ ‘Fever Hard to Bear’ and riveting Randy Weeks cover ‘Can’t Let Go’ sent the packed house out the door very satisfied.

HMR was late to the party on this group considering they’ve played this venue multiple times already. You can bet your sweet bippie we’ll not let that happen again………….GO see a gig will ya?!

Written by Eddie Ferranti Fresh off Folk Alliance 2015, we encountered our first “find’ in Houston from that event at the venerable McGonigel’s Mucky Duck.
