Since I was tipped off by my buddy Tim Kyle that this was a must see show I felt that I needed to at least hang out in the heat for awhile to see if I could get inside. Not surprisingly, the parking lot was full of hot rods and a few slick custom cars as well as assorted choppers and bob tails mostly driven by the hosts of the evenings show, the Highway Horrors hot rod club.

Dykes on Bykes have been around for a few years now and have frequently played the Continental Club in Houston among other venues throughout the Houston area. The band has gone through a few line-up changes since their inception and from what I witnessed the other night they now appear to be hittin’ on all eight cylinders for sure.

The slammin’ dual guitar work of Dykes on Bykes is provided by Matt ‘The Butcher’ Fuentes and Farrell ‘cb 750’ Jeppeson. Rounding out the rhythm section is bass man Derrick ‘The Destroyer’ Mauk and Brad ‘Chum Chum’ Carona on drums. All together, these guys really revved the crowd up with their raunchy rat rod rock and roll.

Playing loud and fast DoB were red lining throughout the show as they shifted from one tune to the next. Original numbers featured included ‘Kick Start’, ‘Methanol’, ‘Hold On’ and ‘Zombie’ to name a few. My personal favorite was a tribute song to Evil Knievel called ‘Viva Evil’.

As mentioned earlier, the show was hosted by the Highway Horrors and they were there in full force to see their club band and to PARTY. Once the Dykes took the stage it was no holds barred as club members slammed each other around and mob wrestled to the music in locked arms while slipping in the spilt beer and broken bottles. Bystanders got frequent Lone Star beer showers. It’s a party maximus when this group gets together.

If you want to meet up with some great folks, hear the high-octane rock & rod rockers Dykes on Bykes and help the Highway Horrors throw a high speed party you need to be at the 146 Roadhouse in Kemah on Sept.17. There will be plenty of cool custom rides, great music, beer swilling and who knows what other kinds of shenanigans.

Leave your wives and daughters at home and go check these guys out……you’ll like ‘em!

Written by Jim Bille Aug 06, 2011 at 08:00 PM Speaking of supporting local music as we here at HMR always try to promote, I headed across I-45 last Saturday to catch up with the hot rod rebel rock & roll band Dykes on Bykes at the Union Tavern.
