ImageThe first time I was asked to cover a gig at a church, it had me clueless, but interested. After all, it was advertised as comfortable seating, good sound, BYOB, and even pie at the break! The intimate feel, interactive listening room called Heights Live has carved out an identity spanning two years now. They are located at 240 West 18th Street in Houston on the grounds of Heights Presbyterian Church and they hold 100 good seats.

Rose and I have enjoyed many a great show there and the ladies in charge are sweet as the pie they serve. Tracey Brandon, Lisa Rogers and Rachel Jones hold down the fort every Friday. They are bringing national, local and a nice pipeline of Texas artists like tonight’s Roberta Morales.

HMR has been a long time follower of RM while with Sisters Morales for 20 years. We were interested to catch up with her since we’d already seen her sister a few times since their departure from the band. She brought a killer guitar player, A.C. Benden, wth her and bolted out of the gate with “Truth” to get the night rolling. The thing about Roberta is no matter if it she’s in a cantina, honky-tonk, or a church she brings it with a smile!

Beaming as she did “Bella Luna,” her first Spanish tune of the night, she looked at ease and comfortable. I loved when AC kicked it up a notch on fave “World Goes Round”  and the bluesy “Every Night of the Week”!

Since the departure of SM, Roberta has penned a children’s book and is definitely riding the Spanish side of the fence across Texas. There will always be a place for that especially how beautifully she can passionately wail on the tender Mexican folk tunes.

Lisa Morales has taken to the rockin’ road and with Roberta the Spanish side is still covered which really keeps the spirit somehow alive of what Sisters Morales was for all those years. They are missed, but you should not miss a chance to relax on a early 7:30pm doors for Heights Live! May God Bless them and HMR wishes them the best of luck in the future!
