The 1980’s are a bit of a blur for me, especially when it comes to the music scene. MTV was an addiction for my buds and I back then who had many a party while watching all the VJ’s presenting the latest bands. They just kept comin’ at ya! One such band was Cinderella , who were fronted by Tom Keifer. They were formed in 1982 and went on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide. The band has not continued, but Mr. Keifer has struck out on the road solo and is beyond holding his own. Over the years, Father Time has messed with TK’s vocals. He has had to have surgeries and survived vocal paralysis, even being told he would never sing again, but has come back nicely. The stalking style with gravelly voice still commands the stage.
His second album with the Tom Keifer band is called “Rise”, which is due out on Cleopatra Records September 13, 2019. The beyond solid band he has toured with since 2013’s debut, “The Way Life Goes”, supported him and then some this night. Keifer did a good job of letting them have their moments to shine. Kory Myers on keys, Jarred Pope on drums, Billy Mercer on bass, Tony Higbee laying it out on electric guitar, and of course Keifer on electric also. Oh yeah, tossed in for good measure Kendra Chantelle and Tom’s wife, Savannah Keifer, on backing vocals.
The new tunes mixed well with the old ones for sure. They all have that signature harder edged raunchy blues gruff that Keifer delivers so cool. Some new ones that stood out were opener “Touching the Devine”, title track “Rise”, killer “Solid Ground”, and next to last number “The Death of Me”. I am guessing TK’s chest was bruised the way he was pounding his heart egging on the adoring and vastly loyal audience.
Talk about fans singing all the words at a live gig?! This one was over the top on chestnuts like “Nobody’s Fool”, “Bad Seamstress Blues” which morfed into “Fallin’ Apart At The Seams”, and “Shake Me”. The non-stop energy displayed by this band was amazing, lead by Keifer’s sweat pouring from his rocker body self! Diehard fans swooned on “Don’t Know What You Got (Till Its Gone)”, exceptionally stinging blues on “Long Cold Winter”, and barnstorming closer “Gypsy Road”. Keifer’s charisma still shines thru big time on stage whether it be his still strong vocal leads, shredding guitar work, or ham n’ egg teasing with the crowd. This was a mature crowd who came out early and STOOD for this blasting rock show from start to finish. It was nice to see people from the 80’s getting off their duffs and supporting live music in Houston, Texas. For me it had been awhile since I strapped on my rough edged rock pants and headed out to stand with the loud and sweaty crowd. Ya know what? It felt damn good. Music in all forms brings out the best in people. GIVE it a try sometime soon………. Love a dude like Tom Keifer who did not give up and is surviving with a true rock heart-that he pounds like a sumbitch!
