{"id":1001,"date":"2011-06-04T20:00:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T20:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/216.71.127.204\/wordpress\/?p=1001"},"modified":"2015-10-13T20:36:23","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T20:36:23","slug":"malcolm-holcombe-almost-austin-house-concerts-pasadena-tx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/houstonmusicreview.com\/wordpress\/2011\/06\/04\/malcolm-holcombe-almost-austin-house-concerts-pasadena-tx\/","title":{"rendered":"Malcolm Holcombe &#8211; Almost Austin House Concerts &#8211; Pasadena, TX"},"content":{"rendered":"<table class=\"contentpaneopen\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\" width=\"70%\"><span class=\"small\">Written by Eddie Ferranti <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"createdate\" colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\">Jun 04, 2011 at 08:00 PM<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\">\n<div id=\"[object]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2011concert\/060411-MalcolmHolcombe4.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Recently Rose and I went to visit one of our most favorite spots to catch live music and a funny thing happened.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure you are familiar with the term &#8220;All hell broke loose!&#8221;\u00a0 Well this night in &#8216;Pasa GET DOWN dena&#8217; at Almost Austin House Concerts, &#8220;all FUN broke loose!&#8221; \u00a0North Carolina native\u00a0Malcolm Holcombe rolled in for his third time at this venue and his performance left everybody stunned, satisfied, and\u00a0flat out\u00a0drained.<\/p>\n<p>To appreciate the &#8220;thing&#8221; that is Malcolm Holcombe you have to strap yourself in and give him your full attention for the evening.\u00a0 In this reviewer&#8217;s case a dose of adult beverages worked just fine to fine tune the experience!\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never seen an artist intertwine passionate guitar playing, extremely captivating harsh and ear catching gravelly voice, and FUNNY ass story telling like this gent did this night.\u00a0\u00a0 My mind was blown and my sides were aching from flat out belly laughs that I could not contain all evening!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2011concert\/060411-MalcolmHolcombe3.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Some chestnuts that slayed me were:<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;It was as hot as a clothesline of tongues waggin&#8217; out there!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;My dog has EDSP!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;Hot as 40 Texas-ES!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;Tonight I&#8217;m seeing an elephant coming and going!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;Don&#8217;t ever drop any frozen fish\u00a0under your refrigerator!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;Goosebumps the size of hail!&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>-&#8220;Did ya ever have the creeps?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As far as the actual tunes there were many\u00a0good ones\u00a0throughout such as &#8216;Down in the Woods&#8217;, &#8216;Not Forgotten&#8217;, &#8216;Comes the Blues&#8217;, stunning &#8216;Don&#8217;t You Miss That Water&#8217;, and a killer &#8216;One Leg at a Time&#8217; about puttin&#8217; your britches on!<\/p>\n<p>MH tends to wander off\u00a0on his story tellin&#8217; and then wraps it up just in time to dive into the song.\u00a0 His style of spinning around on a chair has to be seen to be believed.\u00a0 How he does not flip over is beyond me, but the effect adds to his madman persona.<\/p>\n<p>The second set had some cool things like &#8216;Baby Likes a Slow Love Song&#8217;, &#8216;Becky&#8217;s Blessed&#8217;, &#8216;Who CarriedYou&#8217;, and a sweet &#8216;Sparrows and Sparrows&#8217;. The evening wound down with a\u00a0stirring &#8216;To The Homeland&#8217; and the title cut to his latest album &#8216;To Drink the Rain&#8217;.\u00a0 The packed passionate polite crowd thundered in ovation and MH sat back down to tear thru &#8216;Radio Flyer&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Holcombe is the real deal ladies and gents. He&#8217;s a down to earth fellow who is just damn glad to be working in today&#8217;s tough times doin&#8217;\u00a0what he does best-entertain in many ways!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2011concert\/060411-MalcolmHolcombe1.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Like I stated earlier FUN was thee operative word here folks with highlights of local music icon Donna McKenzie of 103.7 FM introducing Holcombe. &#8220;Dee Mac&#8221; is somebody I&#8217;ve been lucky to know for over 20 years since the old days of Party on the Plaza, a once killer staple of live music in the heart of downtown H-Town on Jones Plaza. She&#8217;s a class act and a welcome addition to the house concert scene.\u00a0 Resident artist and cool ass person, Joy Beckler, doing a live sketch of the front row was beyond different and neato.
