She noticed my work with HMR and wanted to turn me onto a family member’s band that played here in Houston. She mentioned Staci Butler was from the Decoux side of the family.

I started working at Decoux’s Pub and Restaurant in Crystal Beach, Texas when I was 14 years old until I graduated from High Island High in 1992. I was taught some very valuable life lessons working in the kitchen for Larry and Suzy Chapman. They managed the business for Suzy’s parents – Earl and Shirley Hamilton. Shirley was a Decoux and Suzy was the one who sent me the message.

After going to the official site and listening to some tunes I was interested so I searched for an upcoming gig. Lo and behold, Staci’s Edge was having a CD release party at Lucky’s Pub in downtown near Minute Maid Park. I work near Lucky’s and have always liked the place. My ex-girlfriend and I spent a lot of time there before, during and after our relationship and I have used the corner bar for pre-game warm-ups to Astros games and Warehouse shows. I was sold and had February 25th marked down.

As the date drew near, I heard the group on KPFT’s Spare Change Show hosted by Larry Winter’s while I was back down on Bolivar Peninsula and then saw SE got a write up in The Chronicle’s Preview which they call 29/95 now. Goofy name, I think we all like “Preview” better.

All this and I had barely heard a note. I felt like I got a super hot tip. HMR had already contacted Staci and received approval to cover the show weeks ago. HMR Senior Editor, Eddie “Edge” Ferranti even juggled his busy schedule to shoot photos and talked long-time HMR supporter Ray Midgett to come out. Dr. Ray wears many hats for HMR including detailed note taker, dentist and all around good luck charm. Tonight was no exception as HMR drew aces all night.

Staci’s Edge was formed in 2008, featuring Staci Butler-vocals, guitar, keys; Chris Shaw-guitar, Corey Moss-bass and Kirk Gentle-drums. The CD was produced by Staci Butler and is titled “I’ve Got it All” released on Ranch Records first digitally in January and in the traditional form tonight. The disc consists of 11 original songs all written by SB. It is an overall solid effort.

As this three-headed HMR monster marched into Lucky’s after dropping into Warehouse to catch the Austin group Electric Touch’s set, we were welcomed to a packed front room. I had my doubts realizing that SE was competing with Houston’s Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Cook-off and the opening weekend of Mardi Gras. It was obvious that this band has a strong fan base coupled with loyal family and friends.

The playbill had listed a 9PM starting time but I had missed there was an opening act. That put Staci’s Edge getting on stage closer toward 10. Generally standard but what was surprising to me were the requirements of a change over AND sound check in between. The ideal set up would have been August 83 priming it up and then SE hitting the stage blazing with minimal lag time. The gap did give fans time to buy CD’s and take pictures with the attractive front woman – HMR included.

Once SE got the knobs set everyone was ready to party. After saying thank you, SB indicated that the band would play the CD in order. I thought that was very cool and showed confidence in the entire album. There would be some covers and new material thrown in but the track listing would be followed for songs from “I’ve Got It All”.

The sound was pretty good considering the venue and the band was steady behind her vocals and lead guitar. The lack of lighting was odd. It would have seemed bluesier for sure with the house lights dimmed and a spotlight on this sexy woman playing all out. Regardless, the Staci’s Edge dancers helped workout the nervous energy until the girl got rid of the jitters. After playing “You Know I Do”, “Crazy”, “I’ve Got It All”, and “To the Riverbed” in order as promised, we were nailed with a new song, “Silverdime” and 2 outstanding covers, “What I Like About You” and “Ain’t No Sunshine”. The later convinced me that Staci Butler has the skills and feel to play the blues for real alongside the likes of Sue Foley.

Another great female guitarist and front woman, Barbara Keith of The Stone Coyotes, has a great song called “The First Lady of Rock” and I think SB can relate to being a girl that fancied a SG with the distortion cranked rather than a flute or clarinet in music class. Staci Butler met mortality at age 33, stared it in the eye and politely said “No. Thank you”. It seems she honed in on all the things in life there are to live for including YOUR dreams not confusing them with dreams others have for you. Tonight was a display of the truest form of appreciation.

HMR will be keeping an eye on this long-legged sweet lady with the fishnets and wish her and her boys all the best. I am really looking forward to catching her at a good ole blues bar very soon. Right now, I have the May 13th gig at Rudyard circled on my calendar. Until, next time I will see you out supporting live music.

Written by Daniel Barker Feb 25, 2011 at 12:00 AM I had never heard about Staci’s Edge until a former employer of mine sent me a Facebook message shortly after the new year.
