\"\"Marshall Chapman is a longstanding veteran in the music biz who had not played in Houston since opening for Marcia Ball in 1982 at Rockefellers.\u00a0 Tonight she showed up at the Mucky Duck to play some tunes from latest CD, “Big Lonesome”,\u00a0plus her vast catalog of tunes and also introduce her recent book, “They Came to Nashville”,\u00a0with some classic readings from it.<\/p>\n

Chapman saw Elvis in 1957 and it changed her life forever. She had her first hit single “Somewhere South of Macon” in 1976. To say she has been around is putting it mildly.\u00a0 The likes of Conway Twitty, Joe Cocker, and Emmylou Harris have covered her songs.\u00a0\u00a0A quote from her that pretty much sized up the evening was: “The older you get the “Give-A-Shitter” in ya gets more and more de-activated!”<\/p>\n

She proved that big time by blasting the yacking crowd at the Duck three times before they calmed down to listen.\u00a0 Hell, I thought she was going to walk off!\u00a0 Lady surely is no fashion plate by showing up in tee-shirt, baggy gray sweatpants and house slippers. Say what?\u00a0 She did show a dry sense of humor and some of the highlight tunes were “Goodbye Forever”, “I’m Throwing a Going Away Party” and “Good Bye Little Rock and Roller”.<\/p>\n

MC is currently\u00a0appearing in the latest movie “Country Strong” with Gwyneth Paltrow where she plays her road manager. The second set was the better of the\u00a0two as I became more at ease with this screwball all over the board\u00a0performer. A touching “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”, “Mississippi Man in Mexico” and “Betty’s Being Bad” showed the sweet singer-songwriter side of her.<\/p>\n

Her readings from her book were odd for me, but the passages about riding with Willie Nelson were priceless.\u00a0 Hats off to a performer who basically feels ya come out and be entertained in one way or another and if you don’t like it I’m sorry.\u00a0 Amen sweet lady…………God Bless and good night.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
