This was Rose and my second visit to this series and we left impressed once again.

The friendly laid back nature is infectious indeed. Potluck din-din at 6:30pm RULES period. Everything brought was most delicious and a lot of it home made, too!

When it came time an hour or so later, Mr.Hancock hit his stool and spun tales and covered tunes from Lucinda Williams to Townes Van Zandt and of course his vast catalog. “MC Mike” told the crowd in his intro how this gent played 6 nights in a row in Austin at the Cactus Cafe without repeating a tune. Amazing feat. Of Van Zandt BH said when asked how many types of music there are to which TVZ replied: “Blues and Zippee Dee Doo Dah!” Classic. “No Place to Fall” was touching as were many songs including “Circle in the Sand”, “Own and Own” (Texas pronunciation for “On & On”), “You Could of Walked Around the World” and a stirring “Boxcars”.

Hancock has this scruffy Dylan/Willie Nelson thing goin’ on in his own style. Dude was a little rambling at times and even had some blank outs on lyrics in songs, but overall for a fellow who is in his mid 60’s and has an infinite number of lyrics, he’s still delivering the goods.

Fresh off of freezing his butt off with fellow Flatlanders, Joe Ely & Jimmy Dale Gilmore, in Chicago BH seemed relieved and pleased at the warmth he felt from this loyal music crowd this night, which also included his wife.

“If You Were a Bluebird” was soothing and the no guitar or harp presentation of “Dead Ole Owl” was neato. “The Adventures of Split and Slide” saga tale was a priceless delivery of metaphor and irony intertwined.

It is hard to believe he’s played with the Flatlanders on and off since 1972. BH spoke of cool rafting trips he’s involved with in Big Bend Park where you sit around campfires until you fall asleep or pass out! Hancock deliberately has avoided the trappings of main stream cravings and has excelled at solo gigs demonstrating incredible one man jams of guitar and harmonica. This night was no exception and HMR was glad we made it out………Until the next one, Good night!

Written by Eddie Ferranti Feb 12, 2011 at 08:00 PM One of the premier Texas singer-songwriters, Butch Hancock, slid into the comfortable confines of the Conroe House Concerts and did a fine job of entertaining the fine folks north of Houston.
