This we have known for quite some time. On September 21, 2010 at Houston’s Warehouse Live he proved again that as much as things change they stay the same. The night came to be a bitter stew of technical difficulties, an oversold venue and an audience full of douche bags. The Smashing Pumpkins that I came to see does not exist anymore and I know that now. The genius of Billy Corgan seems to have got left behind as well.

The current line-up of The Smashing Pumpkins is Nicole Fiorentino-bass, Mike Byrne-drums; Billy Corgan-lead vocal, guitar; Jeff Schroeder-lead guitar. After many makeovers over the years with reunions thrown in from time to time, this group does not lack in talent. But the sound of this band has not evolved very much from the golden years of “Siamese Dreams” or “Melancholy”…The stage effects were squeezed on stage in what was theme of this night.

Upon pulling up to the venue it was obvious that it was a big night for The Warehouse Live. The parking was scant stretching into the more sketchy areas of the warehouse district not particularly too well lit leading to an exhilarating walk. Upon making my way to will call, I was told for the first time the band gave no photo passes. Alright. Great. I was able to bring my camera in but I was arriving at show time and the general admission hall was already overflowing into the studio area…

I decided to tough it out and work my way as close as possible. This task was impossible within the very aggressive audience where arguments were breaking out right and left regarding respect and rights…Embedded into this struggle, it was tolerable until it became clear that there was an issue with one of the musician’s control towers…This lead to a 20 min extra delay whipping the crowd into a collective ball of heat and frustration.

At last the lights went down and the band took the stage to a roaring applause…The sound was too loud. Just more of the same for the night of trying to fit 15 lbs of shit into a 10lb bucket. I did notice a more Zen projection from the front man between songs. It has been quite some time since BC took a Chucky to the face here in Houston and shut the show down immediately. They were even gracious enough to play many of the older tunes.

This night was an example of the promoter booking a smaller for sure thing rather than going for a Woodlands or Verizon….Bottom line is that this would have been a good show at The Verizon but was bottlenecked here….One thing that you can say about Billy Corgan is that he is consistent.

Written by Daniel Barker Sep 21, 2010 at 08:00 PM Billy Corgan is an asshole.
