It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long from the day we all heard the news. I never realized that Hole’s first album was released around the same time as all this was going on. But after the news broke the only thing I remember was all you heard about was Courtney Love. I had never really heard of her before all that and then all of a sudden here she was with her band getting loads of media coverage, if you were around at the time and had MTV it was hard to miss.

Since that time, we would get these little news stories about how Love was arrested, or about how bad her drug use was. So, when I heard Hole was coming to town I felt this sense of pure curiosity, Kind of like when you see a car wreck and you know you’re going to see some bad shit but you still look anyway. That was my frame of mind in coming out tonight, I just kept thinking to myself I might see some crazy stuff tonight. Courtney Love could be wasted, high, pissed off or even better… all of the above.

I knew Hole was supposed to be going on at 9:45pm so I made my way in right about 9:40pm, got up to the stage front and waited… and waited. I started talking to another photographer and he starts telling me “you know she is notorious for being late” so we continued to wait till about 10:20pm, then the lights go down and the band comes out. Finally, out of the darkness, here she comes, Miss Courtney Love.

My thoughts on seeing something wild were added to as her first words in to the mic were “Sorry I’m late, I couldn’t find my bra.” For the most part, the night was pretty calm. She busted out with a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” which wasn’t great but I have always liked the song so thought it was cool for her to cover.

After she went into “Skinny Little Bitch” off of the new Hole album “Nobody’s Daughter”, Then she goes into another cover song. I think it was an old Nina Simone song or something, but it got me wondering what was up with the covers. Following that, Love starts in on Hole’s “Miss World” and about half way she can visibly see her trying to remember lyrics as the vocals would go quiet as the band played on.

And then…another cover song, this time it was Nine Inch Nails “Closer” and I finally came to realize something. Courtney Love has apparently been so messed up these past few years, she must have forgotten all of her own songs and has decided to just play other peoples. Other covers of the night included the Fleetwood Mac song “Gold Dust Women”.

While I didn’t care much for any of the covers Hole did, they did great on a few of their own songs. Both “Violet” and “Doll Parts” were pretty killer, it didn’t hurt that I actually have always liked these two songs. So as much as I was disappointed not to get to see the drugged out wasted Courtney just make a mess of the place, I can say the evening was an interesting one none the less.

Written by Abel Carmona Jul 07, 2010 at 10:00 PM It’s been seventeen years since the death of Kurt Cobain.
