The performers were the dynamic duo of Nashville’s David Olney with his bearded sidekick Sergio Webb. We’ve been fans of theirs for many years thanks to Pasadena’s Almost Austin Concert series spearheaded by Kenny Pipes, who was in attendance.

Olney has the look of a dishoveled banker who delivers his songs in a tongue-in-cheek fashion that is so very cool. Coupled with the multi-guitar talents of Webb who can creep up and rock your sox off big time.

These tireless touring pros were featuring Olney’s latest work, “When The Deal Goes Down”, which sounds like yet another gem from this prolific songwriter. Solid samplings were “Little Bird” and the down and dirty title cut . Webb’s versitality is impressive like on “Whistle Blow” and stunning “Red Guitar’ , where his psychedelic axe fuzz blends so well with Olney’s raspy thought provoking lyrics.

Olney’s career spans some 40 years crafting tunes of joy, despair and human emotions in his own enigmatic style. The twosome rolled out all the heavy hitters like “Upside Down”, mind bending “Gonna Wait Here On the Cops”, “The Blues Don’t Care”, “Postcard From Mexico” complete with Olney barking while Webb used a megaphone echoing retorts, and killer covers “The Last Time” plus “Shes Not There”!! Nice.

David Olney is a true showman with a deadpan wit which he sprinkles in nicely between songs with gems like : “Sometimes I wake and realize if I had half a brain I’d question why I’m doing this?!”

The late Townes Van Zandt was quoted as saying Olney was one of his favorite songwriters and that’s high well deserved praise indeed. Credited with being one of the founding fathers of the Americana movement he carves out his ever popular niche by being a leader and not a follower for sure.

I know we’ll keep following him whenever we get the chance…………..Get out and support live music will ya?!

Written by Eddie Ferranti We got to enjoy an intimate evening with some old friends both on and off the stage at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck recently in Houston.
