We slap that tag on him because he’s a highly specialized artist who can just flat out dazzle on the violin while adapting to whom ever he has surrounded himself with on stage. He’s constantly changing up his band, albeit keeping electric guitar wizard Willie Pipkin at his side, where their songwriting and instrumental chemistry continues to grow along the lines of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. Pipken even curled up his hair this go around and has a striking resemblance to Mike Campbell !

The packed house tonight at the intimate confines of McGonigel’s Mucky Duck were given an early taste of what was to come with a monster fiddle/guitar jam on the first song. Hood can shift gears to a bluesy jazzy sound straight out of the 1940’s without a hitch, too. You can tell also that Warren has inherited his famous dad Champ’s ability to write very catchy melodies to go along with his Berklee School of Music talent. Champ had an easy going effortless style and his son has that, too, plus an ageless look about him for being 32 years young.

This cohesive squad tore it up on “I’ve Seen Your Invitation to the Blues” with Hood displaying an uncanny control over the violin making it do things I’ve rarely seen. All the while WH is in control, but unselfish, handing off to band mates like his cousin , Marshall Hood, on “Ease My Mind”. The rootsy tempo was non stop as they rocked, rolled, swinged and strolled! Hood has been rubbing elbows on stage as of late (July 3 on this very stage) with Alejandro Escovedo. Many others like Gillian Welch, Susan Tedeschi, Elvis Costello, Little Feet, Ben Kweller, Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett have requested his talented self to their projects! Pretty stout company there folks indeed.

Other stand out moments were “Going to New Orleans” which morfed into a sick “blues fused jam grass” , “When You Are Near”, “Songbird”, stellar “Moving On” and “Lonely in Love”. The constant evolution of Hood’s talents just seem to be making him better every time we see him. He no doubt has a huge edge in musical pedigree going for him, but his hard work ethic is evident in his exhaustingly good live performances. To think this dude only has two studio albums to date is scary.

He seems to be on a mission to keep the fond memories of his dad alive and I’m sure there’s a huge grin on the mug of the Champster from his vantage point in musical heaven………….God Bless this daring and phenomenal young man who is a building force to be reckoned with on the Americana music scene for years to come.

Written by Eddie Ferranti Rose & I headed out to chase down what we like to call a “chameleon” performer by the name of Warren Hood.
