Laid back and intimate, it was a great place to the Sunday evening’s bands. The doors opened a little bit later than expected, which is normal for the venue, so there was a pretty long line of kids waiting to get in.

After a nice meal at one of my favorite downtown restaurants, I made my way around the corner to Walter’s. Shortly after getting in the door, the first of three bands took the stage. The first band was Street to Nowhere, from San Francisco. The band’s sound was just as lame as their name. They played whiny songs with cliché lyrics. Ironically, one of the songs was called “Dead Cliché”. After these guys got done playing their predictable songs, they lugged their gear off the stage and the next act took the stage.

The next performance would be by Kevin Devine, a folk/pop singer from Brooklyn. His music was much better than the first band, though very different. He performed solo, aside from a couple songs where a friend of his sang a little back up. With only his guitar and vocals, he played a solid set. Many times, he took requests from the audience, which seemed to almost know the songs better than he did. He did his best to please the crowd, though had to apologize for playing songs that he wanted to play.

His subject matter ranged from his political views to his views on relationships, all the while keeping his lyrics interesting and his vocals sounding great. After playing a Pedro the Lion cover, which I was very pleased to hear, and ending a song with the lyrics from Modest Mouse’s “Float On”, he ended the set with one last audience request.

After Kevin had put his guitar in it’s case, the members of the headlining band, Straylight Run walked on to the tiny stage. For those not familiar with them, they contain two former members of Taking Back Sunday, though sound completely different. Their music has more folk influences than emo, and went well with the songs of Kevin Devine. Before going to see the show, I listened to their self titled album, but wasn’t all that impressed. This group is definitely one to be seen live. Where the recordings almost put me to sleep, their live sound kept my foot tapping.

During the course of their set, instruments were traded off, and vocal duties were shared. Brother and sister John and Michelle Nolan’s vocals complimented each other and the rest of the band kept the music strong. The band even brought in their own lights, which was a nice change. Anyone who frequently visits Walter’s can tell you that their lighting leaves much to be desired.

After all the songs had been played, including a Dylan cover, the band made their way to the tiny “backstage” of Walter’s, hidden behind the “OFFICE” sing.

After an evening that consisted of good food, great company, and a solid show, I headed back to Clear Lake pleased with how the evening went down.

Written by James Dillon Nov 26, 2006 at 08:00 PM Walter’s on Washington has long been one of my favorite places in town to see a show.
