Everitt grew up in Houston and put out several LP’s in the 70’s, and worked with Eric Burden and the Animals writing or co-writing three numbers from their album, “Ark”.

He spent several years in Nashville as a staff songwriter and won the Best New Folk award at Kerrville early in his career. Danny has been out of the music spotlight, although he has a number of harmony vocal credits, for a number of years with his main attention being his marriage and family. He issued his first full length solo LP in decades in 2007 with “Cold Wind, Cold Rain”.

“Acoustic Souvenirs” is Danny’s latest effort and it has Jack Saunders’ fingerprints all over it. The songs are straight ahead Texas Folk with that down home drawl and touch of blues. All of the acoustic work, be it guitar solo or slide resonator or harmonica flourishes, were tastefully applied and executed with a craftsman’s skill. There is one Marty Robbins cover, “Devil Woman” on the disc that shows off Everitt’s vocal prowess.

The rest of the songs were either written or co-written by Danny. They tell the story of a man that has met the challenges of life and come to terms with them. Songs like “Old Man on the Pier” and “The Ballad of Aubrey Call” recall characters that Danny has met over the years.

Songs like “Sunset Highway” and “Nothing But Everything” recount the ups and downs of being in a marriage or relationship for better or worse. “We Can’t Stop Now” takes the relationship to the next level, when the added responsibility of a child changes the complexion of life.

“Dimes Worth” and “I’ve Got Nothing” are classic Texas country-folk-blues tunes in the finest tradition. Danny Everitt will be taking the new CD out for a release party at the Old Quarter in Galveston on June 7th and will be playing a Sunday gig at the Mucky Duck on July 14th. Let’s get out and give his new recording a warm welcome.

Written by James Killen Jun 15, 2013 at 12:01 AM I had the opportunity to listen to one of the latest discs to come out of Jack Saunders’ White Cat Studios, Acoustic Souvenir by Danny Everitt.
