{"id":257,"date":"2014-06-29T20:00:27","date_gmt":"2014-06-29T20:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/216.71.127.204\/wordpress\/?p=257"},"modified":"2015-10-05T20:16:59","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T20:16:59","slug":"counting-crows-bayou-music-center-houston-tx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/houstonmusicreview.com\/wordpress\/2014\/06\/29\/counting-crows-bayou-music-center-houston-tx\/","title":{"rendered":"Counting Crows &#8211; Bayou Music Center &#8211; Houston, TX"},"content":{"rendered":"<table class=\"contentpaneopen\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\" width=\"70%\"><span class=\"small\">Written by Eddie Ferranti <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"createdate\" colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2014concert\/072914-CountingCrows1.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>The often used phrase of &#8220;third time is a charm&#8221; worked for me recently when I caught the Counting Crows in Houston.\u00a0 Playing at\u00a0one of my favorite venues, Bayou Music Center,\u00a0they came to town supporting their soon to be released seventh album called &#8216;Somewhere Under Wonderland&#8217;. \u00a0\u00a0 It had been since 2009 since I&#8217;d seen them last and at least 10 years before that gig to total the other times I was in attendance.\u00a0 The unknown throughout is always &#8220;which&#8221; Adam Duritz is coming to your town for thee evening.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">\u00a0The first AD I got was when he had begun to tire of doing big hit &#8220;Mr.Jones&#8221; and the crowd got surly because of it.\u00a0 The second was the too chatty Duritz who dragged the show down flappin&#8217; his gums about this and that.\u00a0 Tonight he let\u00a0his excellent band do ALL the talking for sure.\u00a0 Spoken word was almost non-existent and the re-inventing of their music was front and center all thru the 2 hour set.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">The current line-up of Jim Bogios on drums, David Bryson on guitar, Charlie Gillingham on show stopper accordian and keys, David Immergluck on guitar and pedal steel, Millard Powers on bass and David Vickrey seemed on a mission to show this was no 90&#8217;s re-visit type of gig, but more like we&#8217;re still here folks announcement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2014concert\/072914-CountingCrows2.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>Jumping out of the gate with a touching version of &#8220;Round Here&#8221; intertwined with new one &#8220;Palisades Park&#8221; told me I was in for surprises all night of a good kind. \u00a0Sprinkling in an ample share of new ones like country rocker with a dash of zydeco\u00a0&#8220;Cover Up the Sun&#8221; ,\u00a0 &#8220;God of Ocean Tides&#8221; which had an\u00a0early career\u00a0CC feel and heavy guitar laden &#8220;Scarecrow&#8221; showed this band going into a harder jammin&#8217; mode more so than ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">I totally can see where Duritz is coming from when he said recently: &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to get sick of my own songs. I feel I owe people a good performance, but you don&#8217;t owe them a setlist.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Amen brother.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">The tune from old catalog that got it going was &#8220;Omaha&#8221; complete with Gillingham&#8217;s stellar accordian.\u00a0 Who would of thought that would be a highlight moment of a Counting Crows show?!\u00a0 &#8220;Mercury&#8221; also countinued the guitar assault that got this crowd groovin&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0 All in all I was quite pleased by the showmanship and leadership Duritz\u00a0 displayed this night.\u00a0 Whether he&#8217;s matured, took his meds or whatever, the major out of control mop head scored big time with this reviewer.\u00a0 You can bet there will a next time to see if the band continues their winning ways.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">Speaking of flashbacks, an unknown band for me was Toad The Wet Sprocket who has been on a 16 year shutdown and opened this show.\u00a0 The lead singer, Glen Phililips, looked like he was in his twenties instead of 40&#8217;s\u00a0and the crowd seemed to enjoy the nostalgia of the 90&#8217;s hits &#8220;Good Intentions&#8221; and\u00a0 &#8220;AllI Want&#8221;.\u00a0 They tried to throw out some new ones and it sounded okay really.\u00a0 A reunion album is in the works and they also scored a simulcast over Yahoo at the Dallas gig recently.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.houstonmusicreview.com\/mambo\/images\/stories\/2014concert\/072914-CountingCrows3.jpg\" alt=\"Image\" width=\"283\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"6\" \/>\u00a0Lastly before I sign off I must say that\u00a0THIS crowd is an example of the underlying horrible trend that I&#8217;m seeing at too many shows these days.\u00a0 The &#8220;lost generation&#8221; of people aged 30-45 are so socially retarded that taking &#8220;selfies&#8221; (HATE that term) all night long takes over more than sitting and enjoying performers on the damn stage. \u00a0Holding their damn cell phones up to &#8220;record and snap&#8221; parts of the show is\u00a0so stupid and distracting to no end.\u00a0\u00a0 This &#8220;me first&#8221; crap drives me crazy and makes want to ask each and every one of these knucleheads what they actually experience at concerts and why do they come in the first place..Sorry but needed to do that.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: small;\">\u00a0Support your venues and watch and enjoy please!
