\"the-grahams-m-duck-10-2016-139\"<\/a>For the past five years Rose and I have enjoyed the Folk Alliance International in Memphis and Kansas City. The abundance of talent on display in whirl wind fashion is staggering to say the least and it is difficult to latch on to a particular group.\u00a0 One big exception to that rule though for us was The Grahams, who welcomed us from the get go to come to their room and showcases exuding a personal touch which was never forgotten.\u00a0 They are a rare duo who have been exploring music together basically their whole lives. Friends since she was 7 and he was 9, they became a couple in their teens, then husband and wife.\u00a0 How \u2018bout dem apples?!<\/p>\n

Being able to catch them multiple times in hotel rooms and tight showcases made us yearn to see a tour stop in a cool venue. We scored major in that department when they came to one of our fave haunts, McGonigel\u2019s Mucky Duck, where the sound quality is so sweet and clean.\u00a0 On top of that they brought a bass and drum to round out a nice foursome.\u00a0 The night featured cuts from 2013\u2019s Riverman\u2019s Daughter,\u00a0 which is a collection of country and rockin\u2019 numbers culled from a trip down the Mississippi River\u2019s\u00a0 historic Great River Road.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the CD review by HMR boss man Samuel Barker.<\/p>\n

Fitting song to describe their intense bond was \u201cA Good Man\u201d where sassy brassy sweetheart Alyssa looks lovingly at her hubbie Doug with those big eyes of hers showing love. In fact, they have a unique way of doing that a lot which seems to propel their confidence levels throughout the gig.\u00a0 It is so fresh and strong of a rapport that is rarely seen.\u00a0 Storytelling is a strong point of theirs also like \u201cMarnie Hawkins\u201d about a woman in a haunted house . Stellar numbers also included blues fused country \u201cRio Grand\u201d,\u00a0 \u201cPromised Land\u201d ,\u00a0 right from the heart \u201cMama\u201d about passing of DG\u2019s, solid hook line of \u201cGet in line\u201d on \u201cRevival Time\u201d and great guitar licks on \u201cCathedral Pines\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"the-grahams-m-duck-10-2016-176\"<\/a>\u201cGlorybound\u201d is their latest release and it was chocked full of goodies like \u201cAnnabelle\u201d, steamy sexy \u201cBiscuits\u201d, opener buzz bomb \u201cGriggstown\u201d,\u00a0 tale about NY upbringing \u201cThe Spinner\u201d, AG\u2019s fave \u201cThe Wild One\u201d, heavy picker \u201cKansas City\u201d and done deliciously acapella on chairs in the crowd title cut at encore!\u00a0 The dynamic smoothness and\u00a0 ease of showmanship these two\u00a0 display was personified on covers like Texas great Alejandro Escovedo\u2019s \u201cBroken Bottle\u201d and Neil Young chestnut \u201cDown By the River\u201d.\u00a0 I was told after the gig they thought I\u2019d dig it and I DID!\u00a0\u00a0 DG just lit a match to his guitar and burned the house down bringing roars of appreciation from the stunned audience!\u00a0 Hell , Mr.Young would be damn proud to hear that version\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n

In closing, I\u2019d like to use a few quotes from the band themselves.\u00a0 \u201cFor us, making music is sort of whimsical. We\u2019re not precious about anything.\u00a0 The dream is to play with as many great people as we can, and share the music as much as we can.\u201d With incredible musicianship, Alyssa\u2019s powerful pipes and that down-to earth feel they exude, these cats have a bright future indeed.\u00a0 Word is the folks at the Mucky Duck feel the same way and already reached out to come back.\u00a0 I know two folks who have that date circled big time.\u00a0 YOU should also\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n
