This night, at the Warehouse Live, my bud Dr.Ray and myself crossed over to the world of punk rock in the form of SUM41.

The band was formed in 1996 and currently consists of members Deryck Whibley (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Tom Thacker (lead guitar, vocals), Jason McCaslin (bass, vocals) and Steve Jocz (drums). Anybody who has been around that long and has sold over 30 million records worldwide has some kind of following for sure. What that following is was the question to me after I witnessed their high energy show.

Make no mistake about it, Whibley is the driving piston in SUM 41’s engine. The guy pranced, swore, tossed water and just plain stirred up the out of control crowd from the get go and dug it.

Appropriate opener,’The Hell Song’, pretty much described the evening for this reviewer. Although this show was part of the project to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their second album,’Does This Look Infected?’, the band royally rocked some favorites such as ‘In Too Deep’ which had the place in an uproar. By the third song,’We’re All Too Blame’, Whibley was inviting hand picked people up on the stage to jam with the band for the whole gig. Kinda crazy, but cool.

I have to say that this squad kept an incredible feverish pace throughout the evening and did not perform like a veteran outfit that could rest on their laurels and collect a check. Rather they seemed to be on a mission to prove they are still a viable force in the “punk rock” world and to that degree they achieved success.

Particular songs that caught my ear since I’d never heard them before were covers of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ and Beastie Boys ‘Sabotage’, which were part of a storming encore with ‘Fat Lip’ and ‘Pain for Pleasure’.

All in all, the crowd got what they came for, I guess. To me, the maddening distractions of insane crowd surfing, complete with being showered with cocktails and beer while shooting pics, is not my definition of fun my friends. This crowd seemed more about getting hammered than enjoying a concert because the volume was a mess and lyrics were hard to come by all night. The phrase “Whatever floats your boat” seems to fit my attiude to visiting the world of punk.

Keep coming to visit us Canadians, but I’ll be sure to pass the next go around from these bloaks and anybody “punk”…But that’s just me. Get out and support some live music will ya!.

Written by Eddie Ferranti Feb 01, 2013 at 09:00 PM Canadian musicians have been a welcome sight to the Houston area and HMR is always interested in checking out their gigs.
