so Rose and I along with buds Ellen and James made the trek to Austin to catch Ginger Leigh and Wendy Colonna at Momo’s. What an excellent move that was! Mixing in GL’s birthday with Halloween weekend had the makings of a killer event and it delivered. We’ve had the pleasure of following these two young ladies since we caught them in a song swap at ‘Almost Austin’ house concerts in Pasadena, Tx. 3+years ago. However, NEVER had we seen these women do their thing with a full band behind them and we were really anxious to see how different it was.

First up was Ginger and she had a packed house right at 8pm. Sporting a Mafia themed steamy hot outfit including a kinky lookin’ hat and a gold revolver in her belt, GL stormed the stage and never let up.

She’s a stickler for perfection and after much ta due, the band kicked off the night with a super “Better Than Well”. Ginger jumped into the ‘Hit Woman’ take charge lady she is droppin’ F-bombs and grabbin’ the crowd by the throat and pullin’ them in. Next up a cat named Bling Johnson grabbed the mike and said he’s going to tape “Time to Move On” for his “Let’s Get Famous” show on My Austin TV ! Leigh & Company smoked the song, but dude flubbed the recording and had them do it AGAIN. Second time was good, but not like the first version and I know we-and GL-would have preferred to do another tune, but oh well.

“Come On Funny Feelin'” got the motor running again and Ginger stoked the crowd the way she can to sing along. The killer seven piece band did a new one,”Turn Your Eyes On Me”, which made Ginger gush to the crowd “Y’all are amazing, just amazing.”

Leigh claims to be on her website a world traveler, recording artist, song writer, and musician. Toss in a stiff shot of Jameson and what she does best on a cover of Madonna’s “Hanky Panky” IS professional entertainer! The way she played the crowd with the kinky line’Hanky Panky-nuthin’ like a good spanky’ was awesome. Speaking of covers, the Italian diddy she pulled off “Un ‘Anno D’ Amore” (“A Year of Love”) was sultry and alluring. The tune was done in the 60’s by Italian pop star Mina, but I cannot beleive she did it any better than GL did it.

Leigh exudes a raw sexiness along with a playful cartoonish exterior all at the same time as a front woman to a solid band! Her confidence and swagger out front oozes into you and makes you feel part of the gig.

“Guilty’ was bad ass and the elongated “In These Shoes” was a theatrical bonanza featuring the bongo prowess of Marie Leal, the all night killer sax from Scott Solkofske, Stewart Cochran on keys, full bottom bass provided by Mark Williams, and drum work by Frank Favacho.

My only nitpick of the night was the always solid John Pointer on vocals and acoustic guitar seemed out of sorts a bit all night. Dude had monitor problems and never could be fully appreciated especially on guitar. Would of loved to see him stretch out on some electric, but ya can’t have it all. No complaints EVER when Ginger cranks out her standard good night song of “Charge Laughing”! Plus, she tossed in “I Got the Music In Me” which is a perfect fit for this woman. She has way more than the music in her and if you have not seen her, GO!

Following a super show like Leigh’s was a tall order, but Wendy “Super Bee” Colonna pulled it of wonderfully. As I approached the stage during her set up and barked “What it Bee??” Wendy’s face lit up! Her bee costume fit her to a tee especially with the big bug eye glasses and cracked me up throughout her gig.

Again it was fantastic to see this talented woman front a full 8 piece band for the first time. She was in a complete comfort zone prowling the stage and controlling the tight ensemble from the get go. “We Are One” cranked out and even in costme the sexiness of this smoky voiced lady shined thru. Wow and yikes were good expletives to describe the kick off and it rolled thru “The One That You’ve Been Waiting For”, “Is It True”, and “Shine”.

Her bass player Michael Stevens was as animated as they come as he boogie woogied about behind the killer bee! Chad “Charlie Manson” Pope shredded on guitar all night, Dave Madden (who followed this night with his own CD release) kicked it on keys, Chris Trafton handled the drums, with Greg Williams sax, Paul Deemer trombone, and Mike Sailors on trumpet rounding out the super ensemble.

I hate to overuse the term swagger , but the raw emotion and huge lungs if you will were on display big time with Miss Colonna and the crowd dug it. “Pelican Waltz”, “Louisiana”, and “Forgive Me” were smooth as silk and I actually really liked it when WC had the horns step back and she got soulful and sexy tearing it loose! Wendy let it go on “Nothing Gonna Take My Love” where she stated not fear, not greed, not jealousy gonna deter her from her love! Cool. Ginger Leigh hopped on stage and I know they did a Beatles tune together , but the title escapes me due to havin’ too much fun! It was neato to see these two buds sharin’ a mike the old fashioned way.

These two killer women have toured the world a lot and garnered many awards in the hotbed of music called Austin, Texas. To survive and make it there is no easy job to say the least. That being said there is a modern way to help these 2 keep on keepin’ on . www.patronism.com/gingerleigh &
