Taime Downe of Faster PussycatIn a move that gave hope to web hacks everywhere, Metal Sludge, the infamous 80s metal e-zine, put together their first ever Metal Sludge Extravaganza tour, a move that gave a bit of credibility to e-zines everywhere. This tour featured Faster Pussycat, Enuff Znuff and Pretty Boy Floyd. These bands weren’t exactly the most prominent of the 80s metal scene, but definitely some of the most talented. These guys also are some of the few who have evolved in any sense.

In an odd occurrance, this stop on the tour was a part of the Poison tour. Which was a treat since attendees got to be a part of two unique tours for the price of one.

As a bonus, Guns n’ Roses drummer Steve Adler showed up to jam with the guys on the tour and break out some classic rock tunes as well a GnR/Dylan cover, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door with Steve “Sex” Summers of Pretty Boy Floyd on vocals. This spectacle came at the conclusion of Enuff Z’Nuff’s set.

Headlining this section of the show was Faster Pussycat, who many will recognize musically from the classic film, The Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years. What they will not recognize is the band’s new goth image. It’s difficult to see where this fits in with a lot of their songs, but it definintely made them stand out from the other bands. Of course, those who made it out to the Poison’s tour last year were already initiated to the new appearance of Faster Pussycat.

Faster Pussycat played as well as they did last year with vocalist Taime Downe hissing out past hits like Bathroom Wall as well as songs from his other band, The Newlydeads, which may have something to do with the make-up. Guitarist Brent Muscat, who has a hilarious tour diary on www.metalsludge.com, kept the music tight and the set rocking.

Opening the show was Pretty Boy Floyd. These guys played to a slowly filling pavilion, but didn’t let that bother them. Definitely not one of the marquee names from the 80s hair metal scene, Pretty Boy Floyd has to put it all out to catch people, which they did. The energy was high and they seemed to be having fun, which is rare in bands that have been around this long and not seen a great deal of financial success or fame. Who knows, these guys may actually love being musicians.

Enuff Z’Nuff played a set before jamming out with Steve Adler. Noticably missing was the presence of Donnie Vie. Sure, Monaco could hold his own vocally, but unfortunately he and Chip Z’nuff could not completely fill the void left by Vie. Having seen them perform in 2001 on the Poison tour, the set then seemed a lot more full than this one. Hopefully Vie will pull his life together and hit the road with them again.

With only two more dates left on the tour, the Metal Sludge Extravaganza heads will soon be counting the numbers and seeing if they want to give it a go again. Let’s hope they do, because this show is a blast.
