ImageAs part of the Road To Vegas Tour, Collective Soul came to town to rock the people who crammed into the Verizon’s Club V setup. With showgirls on hand and various attractions to see, the show was a little more fun that most concerts, however, that may have had something to do with the performance of Collective Soul.Opening with Counting the Days, the band opened the flood gate of quality songs and nonstop energy that made the set fly by way too quickly. With a barrage of old favorites that even the casual fan would know right off the bat, the band finally introduced themselves and kicked into a new song, Him.

Vocalist Ed Roland comes off like a cross between David Lee Roth, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant and Frank Zappa, the guitarists have a dualing quality reminiscent of the Scorpions and the songs have withstood the test of time. I remember seeing them open for Van Halen 10 years ago and they have grown up big time.

Home was a standout new tune that the band dedicated to their tour manager, who is a big Houston fan. The energy and charisma shown by the band on their newer songs showed how much they still loved being a rock n’ roll band after 13 years.

Right around 11, the band kicked into their song that put them on the map, Shine, providing a nice cap to the evening and bringing the progression of sound back to its starting point. Showgirls and all aside, this band made the night something special and the 1400-plus fans who made it out walked away with some good memories.
