ImageWednesday night I went out to Scout Bar for a little pre thanksgiving warm up. With all the family things that go on during this time of year, Its nice to get out and get away from all that crazy family stuff. Or to take out some family or friends that have never been in town before. And what better place than to what has become our live music showcase here off the waters of Clear Lake.

The night started off with a Hometown band called Melovine who took the stage and didn’t let it go. Their stage presents and sound was everything a rocker could want in a band. Strong vocals and killer guitar riffs were served up by the earful.

Even though this was my first time to ever hear of Melovine I was impressed and am looking forward to seeing them again soon. Melovine is also up for the best new band award from local radio station the Buzz’s “Texas Buzz” show, which brings Texas bands to new fans every Sunday night at Scout Bar…

Next up was Abaisa which to be honest didn’t impress me as much as Melovine, But I had some friends along with me that night who liked their sound. Abaisa’s front man had this whole gothic vampire look going that I thought was pretty cool looking.

I wish I cold elaborate more on their music but I didn’t watch a lot of their set. From the parts I did see Abasia had a very gothic rock tone to them. Wouldn’t mind seeing them again but I wouldn’t make a special trip just to see them either…

And now this brings us to this nights main course The Hunger, They have been a Houston main stay for years and now with their sixth album “Finding Who We Are” just being released The Hunger have gone back out on tour to bring their hard techno inspired style of rock to the fans.

Even though I haven’t kept up with The Hunger in some time now it was great to see them live again. The last time I had seen them was at one of the Street Festivals here in Houston and that was some years ago. As I looked up their Bio I was surprised to see how many albums they have released. And I find it hard to believe they are still considered by many to be an unknown band.

As the Hunger got on to the darken stage a video screen behind them began playing scenes of lighting and thunder. Just as the band began to play the stage was filled with lights and strobes in all different directions. I hadn’t heard anything from the hunger for a long time so I can’t really tell you much about what they played, but I can tell you how they played.

Their show was a very high-energy mix of hard edge guitar riffs and a solid techno beat that drives deep in to your chest. One of the things I enjoyed watching was the way the keyboardist plays, the keyboard is set on a stand that lets it move any way he wants it to. As he would play he slammed it down and it would go all over the place looking like it would fall any moment.

The hunger really put on a great show and I am definitely going to try to keep up with them and hopefully see them live again. If for whatever reason you have lived in Houston or anywhere in Texas for that matter and haven’t heard of The Hunger then this is a band you need to see, especially if you’re a fan of bands like Ministry or Nine Inch Nails.

If you have heard of them before but haven’t seen them in while then go out and catch them live again there shows are sure not to disappoint. It was great to see them at Scout Bar a place where you can get right up to the stage and really see and feel the music. I have always enjoyed club shows over big venue places.

On the one part yes big venues have the big lights and big sound, but when you bring a band to a smaller venue you really get to see the band itself and not be distracted by every lighting effect known to man. So if you ever out on the south side of town go check out Scout Bar they seem to have found a great mix between live music venue and dance club all in one place. And have shows going on almost every night of the week with cheap drink specials and very low if not any cover some nights, its well worth the trip.
