ImageGot a chance to go to the Frank Zappa Tribute show dubbed “Zappa Does Zappa” headed up by Frank’s son Dweezil. I had the pleasure of seeing Mr.Zap himself in the early 80’s at the Summit. A sweet experience indeed. Trying to duplicate that feat would be hard and, as it turned out, it was this particular evening.

I had forgotten what a “orchestra of the rock bizzare” Zappa actually presented to the audience. The music is a genius type experience that unfortunately now a days comes across as plodding and disjointed. Don’t get me wrong-there were some very fine performers on this stage. Dweezil impressed me with his guitar work quite frankly. The dude can play. It just was weird. Plus, my major red ass came from being led on that this was going to be an all star type band with Terry Bozzio & Steve Via. Well, Bozzio came out 1 hour & 40 minutes into the set! Via trotted out 2 hours IN!! Say what?!

Dweezil has spoken of bringing his dad’s music to the young folks to experience it live because today’s airwaves won’t touch Zappa. To this day Zappa’s whole contribution to the music business has been misrepresented.  Rolling Stone still disses him for no apparent reason. He fought on Capitol Hill for the right to have lyrics of choice. For all of this, I applaud Dweezil & company for trying. To this reviewer, it just was a boring attempt on a “school night”………….CYA around, Edge
