ImageIt’s actually happened; the Arc Angels have finally seriously reunited. After an almost 20 year absence that only spawned the occasional reunion with a concert here and there, the Austin super trio of Chris Layton, Doyle Bramhall and Charlie Sexton have come together for a full blown tour. The resurrection started off in May in the U.K and Ireland finding the AA’s opening for Bramhall’s old boss Eric Clapton.

But there’s one thing that’s noticeably different this time around. Tommy Shannon, one half of the band’s rhythm anchor is missing in action. Evidently, Shannon was not so interested in regrouping with his former band mates and is sitting it out. Although officially not named in the band’s lineup, Mark Newmarc has been filling in the bass shoes nicely for the time being.

The reunion was official back in March when the trio announced the release of a DVD of concert footage taken in 2005 along with starting work on a second album.

Their U.S. tour made its second stop at House of Blues last Saturday night. The packed house welcomed the band, as would be expected, with open arms and anticipation of the second coming of a band that was too short lived way back when.

The band teased the crowd with a few new numbers but mostly stuck with their first album material. ‘Carry Me On’, ‘Sent by Angels’, ‘Nadine’ and ‘Spanish Moon’ were all featured.

A couple of interesting covers were performed as well. A killer version of the Paul McCartney classic ‘Too Many People’ was featured about mid way through the show. Reworked by Brahall into a grittier and more Arc Angels friendly number, the remake of McCartney’s so call jab at Lennon shifted tempos towards the end and morphed into a modern psychedelic sound that really hit the crowd on their heads. This may have been my favorite song of the evening.

The second cover was a fantastic rearrangement of ‘Outside Woman Blues’ by Cream, which wasn’t too shabby either.

Even though the 2009 version of the Arc Angels is only running on three cylinders it’s still great to see these guy’s back in action and on the road again. Great show!
