ImageIn March 2009, the Mucky Duck hosted local public radio station KPFT’s 39th birthday bash. At that event I was turned onto an interesting band called PO’ Girl. They hail from Vancouver, Canada and I had longed to get another look at them ever since that day.

Well, that day finally arrived at the Duck and the second time around was well worth it. “Bloom” kicked off the night featuring Benny Sidelinger on something called a dobro. Dude makes his own guitars and knows how to play them too. “Drive All Night”, inspired by a 26 hour jaunt from Texas to Colorado, had killer banjo and harmonies. “When We Are in Love” was very tender and the following tune, “No Shame”, was the inspiration for their current tour. It is a ballad bringing attention to child abuse in the world and PG is donating lots of their monies made on the tour to charities supporting the cause. Very nice gesture.

Early on I found the mixture of different musical instruments most different and appealing. As the show progressed it was amazing the array of things they played on! Awna Teixeira played something called a gutbucket bass that had an alluring quality to it to say the least. Mixing in the sensual voices of her and Allison Russell and it felt like I was taking a bubble bath musically! The music was great and the vocals soothing, but annunciation was so subtle at times it was hard to grasp the lyrics.

“Malaise Days” was a very powerful tune featuring another instrument, the clarinet, and having the crowd “jumping right out of their skin” with Allison ! “In the Days” followed with an Appalachian/Celtic sound by Teixeira. PG closed out the first set with more versitility by purring a tune in French. Classic.

After the break, they performed a beautiful song about roadkill of all things, “Deer in the Night”. Freakin’ bicycle bells were the new addition to the vast array of instruments Po’ Girl uses to produce their unique sound. Other highlight tunes of this set were “Prairie Lullaby” and “Dig Me a Hole”. Just feeling the lazy melodies, sweet harmony, and mellow ass “grooviness” had me feelin’ nasty and dirty in a good way.

You can’t really nail it concerning their eclectic type sound. Country, blues, folk, alt-rock, and a punch of jazz roll out of these kinko ladies like smooth honey. Whether it is the snarlin’ lip delivery of Teixeira bangin’ on her ten foot “whip-it stick” bass or the cooing rasp and soul shakin’ of Miss Russell,  its all sexy good. Hell we were so tranced out by this gig that Rosie & I caught them at Momos up the road in Austin 3 nights later!

In the words of resident music man, James Killen, Po’ Girl songs “Have no hooks. Every song is like a blues/bluegrass pastel.”  Good one.  In the end people, this band has been doing it since 2003. Let’s hope they find a way to harness their “thing” and make it big down the road. In the meantime catch them when you can and remember to bring a towel…God Bless
