ImageAfter the success of last year’s tour with David Lee Roth, Hagar once again set forth on the road with a rock powerhouse, this time it was Lynyrd Skynyrd. Only problem, the boys in Lynyrd Skynyrd had to go home due to illness. So, the Red Rocker rolls on without them. This time, it was as a part of local rock station 101 KLOL’s birthday bash. Replacing Lynyrd Skynyrd on the bill was local rock legends, King’s X.

King’s X took the opportunity to come out and play some of the favorites that many people didn’t know they were responsible for. Quite a few heads were bobbing and many fans were found again or won over by the set.

After King\’s X shut it down, the audience began to stir and prepare for Hagar to come out and give them all the old classic rock anthems they knew by heart.

Being the showman he is, Hagar brought out an elaborate stage set-up for the tour. Filling the stage with a movable version of his bar, Cabo Wabo, Hagar brought fans up on the stage to hang out and enjoy a drink. With the lights and wailing guitars, Hagar brought the pavilion to life.

Unfortunately, Hagar’s sound was unbearable at times. With the volume of the guitars cranked way beyond the vocals, most of the songs lost their melodies and morphed into walls of fuzz. Maybe Hagar believed most of his fans wear ear plugs to filter out the fuzz or maybe his voice needs some masking, but in the end many of the songs melted into one another due to the fuzz.

All was not lost on the night, however. Many of the Skynyrd faithful who held tickets to the show still made it out and took delight in the Van Halen-heavy set list and screamed along to the classic Hagar/VH tunes many of them still listen to.

Of course Hagar played along with his fans, as he is famous for. Plenty of questions were asked by Hagar and all were met with loud applause. It’s this ability to connect that makes the Red Rocker so beloved to his fans after all these years.

Though the sound could have used a new mix, the show was bright, loud and entertaining, everything a rock n’ roll show should be.
