ImageRegina Spektor has always confused me. Not in a bad way, like most pop singers. Perhaps the better word is intrigued. I had never understood why her songs are such catchy pop gems, but have so much going on musically. And I have never understood why the indie music scene more or less disregards her (at least in the crowd I know). Seeing her live didn’t help clear my confusion any, but it did give me an even greater appreciation of her.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the Regina Spektor show as much as I did. I had been sick all week and been buried under a massive pile of homework and when Tuesday night’s show rolled around I really didn’t feel like leaving my bedroom. But I did leave my bed and I am quite happy that I did.

I was informed when I went to pick up my tickets that the evening’s show would be assigned seating. Being able to just kick back and enjoy the show was exactly what I needed. After getting my tickets my friend I made our way to seats to catch the ending of the opening band, Jupiter One. I am glad that I missed most of their set, as they were simply a boring modern pop rock band complete with bad haircuts. After a few songs of being annoyed with the songs of Jupiter One they left the stage and it was prepared for Miss Spektor to perform.

As soon as Spektor sang the first note of her set I instantly became a fan of her singing. With all the vocal tuning used on records these days it is really hard to tell whether someone can actually sing. During her set, my friend I decided it would be a sin to use any sort of tuning on her immaculate voice. Also throughout her set I took notice of her amazing sense of humor and sarcasm. Signing songs about remembering “the time I would only smoke Camels”, and “somebody next-door is fucking to one of my songs” made me laugh in my seat.

I also realized how wonderful of a musician Regina Spektor is. She worked time changes into her pop songs without throwing making it a noticeable change. Some I know from personal experience to be rather difficult. In addition to her primary instrument, the piano, Regina also played a couple of songs on guitar. Accompanying Regina on stage were two string players, cello and violin, and a drummer. At one point during the set Regina sang a song sans instruments. This song was a memorable moment during the set for me as she sang a song about judging people based on their eye color a capella.

The first two thirds of Regina’s set was heavy on new songs, which sounded great but I was very happy when she got to the end of the set when she played her more popular, older songs. Songs such as “Hotel Song”, “Sampson”, and “Fidelity” sounded great absolutely great live. I am sure it is cliché but my favorite moment during her set came when she played the song “Us”. First of all I think it is a very well written song, but in a live setting the song was completely perfect.

Because I saw Regina live, I now have an all-new respect for her. She is one of the few modern performers that can sell records, have tons of young fans, but still write catchy, musically technical, and witty songs.
