ImageWhen getting to the Meridian I was actually pretty excited about seeing Gwar, It had been years since I had last seen them. I thought back to those memories of high school when I would hear stories about this band that covered the crowd in blood, piss and any other thing you could think of.  And how this band looked like they walked off the set of a horror movie with costumes that would scare old people in to their deathbeds.

Hearing all these things just made me want to see just what this Gwar was all about. So at 15  I was at my first Gwar show being covered in fake blood, getting slammed around in the pit and seeing one of the most entertaining bands who have gave me some of the best concert memory’s in my life. What brought these memories on was seeing a few young kids at the show who you could tell had no idea what they were about to see and it reminded me of myself at that age.

To some you may be thinking how in the hell is that fun, I’ll tell you how. Gwar is like a 10 car pile up on the freeway, you know its going to be brutal, bloody, and gross but your still going to watch every minute of it and in the end you walk away with stories about a band that make more and more people want to see just what the hell your talking about.

As the lights dimmed a puppet of a soldier was up on stage making a SOS call for help with the sounds of bullets and bombs going off , dark figures rose from behind the solider and with one swipe of his sword Oderus Urungus took off its head and as the blood sprayed over the crowd Gwar began their musical assault.

Gwar did two songs before stopping to address the slaves as they call their fans. Giving thanks for those who were brave enough to show and to those who were even braver for being stage front. Just then another figure came from the back it looked like Hitler who was there to tell the band how great they were and how much everyone in hell enjoyed listening to them.

As Hitler finished speaking he turned around and on the backside of him was Jesus, who was there to condemn the band for being so vile. As they augured back and forth I these heard words I will not forget, Oderus told Jesus to go jack off and that’s pretty much what happened next. The Hitler figure began masturbating all over the crowd as Gwar began their next song.

The rest of show was a lot of the same old Gwar I had seen in the past. Blood, piss, cum, and any other vile thing you can think of being spewed all over the crowd. This was a second time for Gwar in Houston this year as they also played at the Sounds Of The Underground tour this past summer.

As far as Gwars music goes I have never been that big of fan of it. Nor have I kept up with any of their albums. About all I can tell you is their new Album “Beyond Hell” was released earlier this year. And even though I’m not a fan of their music I will always try to not miss the chance to catch them live. Their live shows are the stories of legends and are something I believe anyone who goes to see live music or is in to any kind of heavy metal at all has to see at least once in their lifetime.
