ImageJohnny Winter made an appearance at the Meridian last Saturday for one of his road shows and did not disappoint the modestly sized crowd as he displayed his legendary guitar fire with a set that featured some of his best music.

Classic Johnny Winter material such as ‘Good Morning Little School Girl’, ‘BlackJack’ and ‘Redhouse’ was featured during Saturday night’s set. The song ‘Don’t Take Advantage of Me’ was the surprise number for me as I’ve never heard Johnny perform this one live. Other gems featured Saturday included ‘Lone Wolf’, ‘Boney Maroney’, ‘All Over Now’, and ‘Boogie Real Low’.

The two encore numbers enabled Winter to showcase his classic slide work on his vintage Gibson Firebird. The encore songs featured were ‘Mojo Boogie’ from the album Third Degree and ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ from his album Second Winter.

Johnny Winter is probably the busiest blues guy out there today. He has been on a never ending tour for the past few years and you’re likely to catch his show anywhere from biker bars to huge musical events like Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival next week. Volume 6 of his Live Bootleg Series CD was recently released, and; Gibson Guitars has issued replicas of his favorite Gibson Firebird guitar, and; an autobiography has been written chronicling his entire musical saga.

Saturday night’s show was another great performance from legendary bluesman Johnny Winter.  Hope to see him back in Houston soon.
