Image70’s and ’80’s classic rock mainstays Heart blasted into the House of Blues in Downtown H-Town recently and ripped it to shreds.

Backing their latest album “Red Velvet Car”this time out they did a fine job with it.   Before a beyond packed house they trotted out new ones like “WTF”, “Hey You” and the title cut which did not induce mass exoduses to the potty and smoking areas.

It was flashback city for me though when the heavy hitters showed up.  Ever go to a gig and say : “Man I didn’t remember how many good tunes these dudes had!”  Well that was it in a nutshell for this reviewer.  “Heartless” was the 2nd song and the place was never the same after that.  And I mean that in a good way folks!   A drawn out intro by still hot as hell lookin’ Nancy Wilson on “Straight On” smoked along with “Magic Man”, “What About Love”, fluff stuff “These Dreams”,  very tender and stirring “Dog and the Butterfly” and an un-real version of “Even It Up” where the Stones classic “Gimme Shelter” blended in and out.  Bad ass stuff indeed.

Speaking of which, bombastic Ann Wilson still packs a mighty vocal punch.  Early on the sound was a bit shrill, but as it wore on the notes were being hit in a killer way.  NONE better than the two song close out where again Nancy calmly stoked the crowd to a fever pitch on the intro to “Crazy On You” which was followed BIG time by “Barracuda” !  Yikes type stuff.  Then the lights went down and the two song cover stunners encore were spellbinding.  Heart has had an open affection for bands like Led Zepplin and when the stomping sound of “The Ocean” started up with BOTH girls moving like teens, it was awesome.  Topping that with Ann’s goose bump inducing rendition of the Who’s “Love, Reign Over Me” was a fitting end to a powerful and professional performance by a class act.

35 years of doing “it” is fantastic in my book.  I had the pleasure growing up of discovering a passion for women in rock by hearing the likes of Harry, Hynde, Jett and Benatar to name a few.  IN that mix for sure was the Wilson’s, who still HAVE it.  Man that was fun and get out and do it sometime……….Good night all !
