ImageSometimes nostalgia creeps into a gig without even knowing it these days. Dating myself a tad, I flashed back to John Cameron Swayze doing the old Timex watch commercials about how they “Take a lickin’ and keep on tickin'” as I rocked the night away with the South Austin Moonlighters at the venerable McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston

This Austin foursome debuted a new guitar player to mesh with the major parts that already were holding down the formidable foundation. It was the third time and seemed like a nice pick-up out of the gate in the form of Chris Beall. Phil Hurley’s Joe Walsh-esque cranking and antimated style rocks with the firm back beat of vet Phil Bass on skins, complimented by the soul master Lonnie Trevino plucking the bass to perfection. The results are an unreal mix of Memphis blues, to classic Americana, to straight in your mug rock done seemlessly and unselfishly.

Busting out with “Tonight I Will Stay Right Here With You”, the vocals were clear and crisp and amped up just right to enhance their massive cohesive talents. By the time they did “On Main Street” early on, a Louisiana soaked tune with awesome mid-song flip to Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle”, the joint was shakin’ with fun! 110% is all these cats ever give and the momentum steamrolled on gems like “Loverman”, sexy to the bone “Found My Way Back” and Bass’s stellar vocals on thumper “29 Miles”.

ImageHMR has been riding the SAM train for awhile now and a major attraction is they are resilient and striving to keep cranking out new tunes like “Movin’ On”, about the long driving trip from Austin out of Texas going west. They are promising a new album and the two they have out, “Live At The Saxon Pub” and latest “Burn and Shine” , are both stout efforts.

All the members can handle vocals and Beall was let loose on a couple classics – a Byrds tune “Ain’t It Funny” ( I think) and show stopping Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” where Trevino brought goosebumps with his striking vocals. These guys have a garage band mentality wrapped around a strong mutual respect for each other which transcends into a quick paced oh- my- gosh it is already over type gig!

Here’s hoping this latest quartet stays together and keeps on tickin’ delivering big dividends to an ever growing fan base from Austin to Houston…God Bless all the true music lovers out there!
