I don’t know what I was thinking when I purchased tickets to see Mac McAnelly and his buddy Eric Darkin last night on the Boliver Peninsula near Galveston. We live north of Lake Conroe.
I love Mac’s shows and I thought it would be cool to check out this ‘new to me’ music venue.
So, we hopped in the car and made the 120-mile drive through Winnie to the venue. It only took us a very long 2 ½ hours but when we got there ‘all was well’.
The Davis Brothers opened for Mac and we thought they were very good. They stepped aside in time for McAnally & Darkin to start at 830 pm plus or minus a few minutes and didn’t end until well after ten pm.
I must confess that we left just before ten during Mac playing Bubbles Up…. a song penned by Mac’s boss for several decades, Jimmy Buffett. I hated to do that but we were able to listen to the end of the show on Sirius.
I knew we had a long drive home and we wanted to get out in front of the traffic that would be taking the same route we needed take…..again through Winnie. It was a tough drive, after a very long day! Friday and Saturday were very close to one another having been at The Woodlands Pavilion Friday night (see Styx, Kronin, Felder Review)
I am really writing this review not to convince you to go see McAnally, even though you should, but to say that you really need to check out the venue. Unless you live way south of Houston I suggest you take your RV to the camp or stay in Galveston and ferry over to Bolivar.
The venue is clean, very nice sound, good lighting, good food (reasonably priced), a couple bars well located, several seating options including lawn chairs and the breeze coming off the gulf made the evening very pleasant.
The camp had $10. parking with golf cart shuttle service from the lot to the front gate of the seating area.
If I could have taken my helicopter it would have been a perfect evening.
Go check it out if you haven’t been. They have a good line up and if you can keep from having a long drive it’s a bargain.
Go support live music…please!
