ImageFor years now, Avril Lavigne has been wrestling with how she will make the jump from fashionable pop punk princess to serious performer. She’s lost the trademark tie, the raccoon-like eye makeup and decided to let her songs to the talking. Sure, they’re still in their adolescent stages, but with time, Lavigne could be a staple face in line of female rockers.Opening the show with her first hit, Sk8r Boi, Lavigne got the house hopping from the get go! She pranced all over stage, posing at center on the monitors to beckon the audience to sing along with her.

Quickly jumping from her first hit to some of her more current material, Lavigne played through some of the better songs off her new album, Under My Skin, including the hidden track I Always Get My Way. But she did not ignore the songs from Let’s Go, playing some of the non-single songs such as I’m With You to appease the old fans.

Lavigne showed some vocal range during the performance rather than just screaming. She is definitely moving towards the Jewel/Sheryl Crow/Alanis side of the fence as opposed to the “Punk Princess” image she’s been strapped with to this point. She looked more mature and as hot as any rocker chick in her t-shirt, jeans and blond long hair.

She easily went from a prancing sultry rock chick to a guitar princess to a piano-based pop star to an acoustic crooner, during a mini-set with just her and a guitarist. The acoustic set was mellowed and consistent enough that it could have been done at Mucky Duck. This is where the audience got to see a more “serious” progression in her career and a showing of vocal prowess.

In basic summary, she has crossed more over to People Magazine than Punk snot! The girl is obviously doing something right judging by the huge throng that showed up and sang every word to her tunes. I ALWAYS have a “soft” spot for female peformers and bands. She played and performed at the top of her game and I dug her for that.
